Cedar Point Roller Coaster Future

What do you guys think CP's new coaster would be if you had the power to choose?

I think they would need a unique coaster like a floorless or flying. A 4th Dimension Coaster would be another good idea. It just seems like the only "unique coaster is Mantis (Stand-Up Coaster) and that the rest are kind of unique, but just sit downs. What Do You Think?

I don't think Mantis is unique at all. It's a stand-up, which most consider are gimmicks.

But I agree, most of their coasters are over-sized versions of other coasters, nothing that really stands out.

However, they tend to be very good rides.

As for their next coaster, I think they need to work on getting a new flume into the park instead of a new coaster.

Not unique?

Corkscrew was the first coaster to go upside 3 times.

Millennium Force, Gemini, Magnum XL-200, and Top Thrill Dragster were the first of their height, and Top Thrill was unique in its design when it opened.

Wicked Twister was the first impulse with two twisted spikes.

Magnum XL-200 was unique? How so.
It wasnt the first hyper.. it wasnt the first big non-looping steel.. And it wasnt the first red coaster.. So yeah. How was it unique.

It was the first to break 200, otherwise I defy you to name the coaster that broke it first.

That's not unique. In that case, every coaster that upped the inversion count record is unique. Not so. If anything, Corkscrew is just like every other 1970's looping coaster by Arrow. There are a ton of those.

Quote:
Millennium Force
Your Intamin Mega coaster, just made a lot bigger. Only thing unique about it at the time was that it used an elevator cable lift. It's not the only one now.

Quote:
Gemini
Definitely a unique looking ride. Twin racing steel without loops on a wood structure. Even though it's still a big mine train with two tracks I'll give you this one.

Quote:
Magnum XL-200
A very large Arrow mine train. First to break 200-feet? I don't think it was, but even if it did that's just a record, it doesn't make it unique.

Quote:

Again, a record doesn't make a ride unique. Top Thrill Dragster was Knott's Berry Farm's Xcelerator x 2 height and without the overbank turns.

Wicked Twister was the first impulse with two twisted spikes.
Granted this is the only ride of its kind out there, but still 100% based on a first generation impulse coaster. All it did was make one tower a twisty one as opposed to completely straight.

=======================

Really unique rides are like X2 and Eejanaika, Atlantis Adventure, and Furius Baco.

Don't fret. Nearly all of Cedar Point's coasters are quite good rides. They're just not unique.

I think their next coaster should be an Intamin prefab wooden coaster. I don't know what they'll do to claim a record, since we know they have to do something unique and cable lift is out, as well as first prefab in the U.S.A., but I am sure they'll think of something (first wooden coaster with ankle restraints?)

I pick this type of coaster because El Toro is the most thrilling ride I have ever been on, and unlike a KK/TTD, it has staying power.

Yeah, I forgot about Wicked Twister. But do any of you think that the next coaster should be unique and not another Magnum XL-200. But I have heard that although these coasters (besides Wicked Twister) aren't unique, they provide a great ride.

Well, maybe our definition of unique is arguable, but either way, it's not as if though they're not successful or in some way innovative when they opened.

^^What ride do you think is like Magnum XL200? If you're thinking Millenium Force, it doesn't touch it. There is almost no airtime on this ride. I think the biggest pop of airtime was the small hump next to the queue before the overbanked turn. Sure, the speed is great, but I can't think of anything at Cedar Point that touches Magnum.

I think CP's whole problem is they always want something unique. What happened to just building great rides? Some of my favorite rides are not unique in any way, they just take names consistently every time I ride them.

Disclaimer: I am not a CP hater, but think their coaster collection has alot of mediocre coasters.

^Airtime at Cedar Point? The best ride they have for airtime has always been Blue Streak.

A slight argument to those claiming Moonsault Scramble was the first over 200 feet and not Magnum, I think apsterling may have meant (in regards to Magnum) first complete circuit coaster over 200 feet.

And I agree with Chris. A new log flume would be nice to see at the Point. When people go on water rides, they don't necessarily want to be drenched. And unfortunately, those are the only 2 water rides CP has now.

As much as CP loves ol Intamin, I'd say go with a prefab wooden coaster.

At least they probably can't screw that up!

Oh wait.

And on the point about unique attractions: something unique doesn't always mean something great.

Carowinds has built several firsts and unique rides. Doesn't mean they were great.

They built:
Carolina Cyclone - 1st 4 looping coaster, its blah except for the first drop.
Flying super saturator - It was ok I guess.
Drop Zone - One of the first Intamin 2nd gen towers. Also one of the shortest.
Nighthawk - 1st flying coaster (I know the didn't build it) and it's not that good.
Vortex - One of the first standup's and they should have waited for a floorless

So having something unique, doesn't make it necessarily GOOD.

Cedar Point IMO is a nice park, with 2 great coasters, 3 or so good ones and 12 mediocre crappy coasters.

I want a non-intamin wooden coaster at CP in the next couple of years. Hopefully, they'll get a log flume for 09 (I doubt it, but you never know).

And Wes, I'm gonna have to change your ratings of CP's rides to fit my personal tastes: I say 4 great, 4 good, and 9 ok to crappy. But, it's all opinion.

I say build a B&M flyer with a new unique element. That would be pretty cool.

I'm just not all that impressed with the 'little' claims to uniqueness. Like the claim Wicked Twister has about it's spires ... ok, that's nice, but it's not as cool as saying "first coaster over 300 feet" or "first power launched coaster" or "first standup" or anything like that. It's more like KI's Invertigo which has the claim to something like "longest inverted something or other" that is like ... uh, ok? Cedar Point and King's Island, for a long time, seemed to be in a war of building more unique and unheard-of 'firsts' in coasters:

First standup (1985 - King Cobra, KI), first complete circuit hyper (1989 - Magnum XL-200, CP), first complete circuit giga (2000 - Millenium Force, CP), first looping wooden and first wooden hyper (2000 - Son of Beast, KI), first complete circuit strata (TTD - 2003, CP).

Since the opening of Top Thrill Dragster, neither park has done anything really, really ground breaking or unique, something no park has ever done before. Though that's only been 5 years, I'd like to see them start planning on the next "big thing" in coasters, and I'd like to see it at Cedar Point. The Point has, annoyingly, been beat out of all it's major records within a short span of time after opening their 'firsts' and I'd like to see them get one and hold onto it for awhile, like KI has done with The Beast (30 years as the longest wooden) and Son of Beast (still the only one to have incorporated a loop, even though it was removed, and also still tallest and fastest).

How about an Intamin pre-fab wooden that successfully incorporates a corkscrew ... and keeps it?

First continuos circuit non-shuttle. I feel it was innovative in popularizing the modern day hyper coaster design we saw from arrow, morgan, and nowadays most commonly B&M and Intamin, though.

Something like a well themed aquatrax would be something. I'd really like to see a good GCI, Intamin, or GG woodie, though.

A spinning wild mouse would fit in many places. An enclosed coaster could work too. And yes, a good woodie would be nice, but where to put it and what could it do that would be unique - so wait until some new ideas crop up.

But whatever they put in, it needs to be long and high capacity. With people's funds being more limited as time goes on, they're gonna want the most bang for their buck and waiting in long lines just won't be tolerated (only getting a few rides in during a visit) when there's other parks - and there are many - where one can go and spend their money and feel that they it was worth it. I've noticed that the attendance numbers are down - or at least the year-to-year ride counts are down. With additional rides put in a park, there's more to chose from and if you've got to wait 2 hours for one ride, it's just simply not a very fun day.

I always thought Cedar Point could use one of those junior inverted coaster like the Runaway Reptar or the Ghoster Coaster they have at Kings Island. I don't know if they still build those anymore, but that's just my opinion.

But the problem with the kiddie invert or kiddie wooden coaster is that Kings Island is about a four hour drive away and that is why Cedar Point has been trying to stay as far away from KI and Nikalodeon Universe to have its own special feeling and coasters.

Since CP has so many wooden coasters, what about an almost complete redo by Gravity Group, including like 1000 feet of completly new track to make a new exciting layout, and taking out anything or adding anything to make what I have heard is the worst wooden coaster experience the best. Also to make Cedar Mine Ride more exciting.

So? They could have different layouts.... And even if they were the same, who cares? Outside of coaster fans most people wouldn't even know its the "same" thing.

SFNE and Lake Compounce both have Boomerangs.. within an hours drive of each other.

Fiesta Texas and Sea World both have Batman clones... like 15 miles from each other.

Funtown Pier and Casino pier... a 5 minute WALK from each other both have Wild Mouse coasters.

Both Cypress Gardens and Wildadvenutes have a clone of the same coaster.. IN THE SAME PARK.... (Vekoma kiddie coaster and Vekoma Kiddie SLC..)
