Nascar: Daytona 500 and Related Events

Another season of Nascar is here and it starts with the Daytona 500 this Sunday.

Who will win it?

Plus, don't forget the duels are this Thursday, and did anyone watch the Bud Shootout?

This Tony Stewart has a new car sponser and number: 14? I know this question is just a tip of an iceberg. I at least read the headlines about the problems with finding sponsers, teams combining and such.

I'm excited about the new season. I did watch the Bud Shootout and it was one of the more exciting shootout's in a while. I'll also be watching the Duels on thursday. I hardly miss anything Sprint Cup related.

My pick for the Daytona 500 is Jeff Gordon of course.

Lameness was seeing "Camry" on the front of that standard car design, Car of Tomorrow, at the Qualifier.

Mark Martin will win it. He finally found a good team and he qualified second. I saw the Shootout and I thought that Jeff Gordon was going to win until Harvick pulled out of the draft.

Amazing races this week. I was very happy to see Jeff Gordon get back in victory lane in the Gatorade Duels. Mark Martin even looked amazing.

The Daytona 500 is tomorrow and after seeing the races all this week i'm really pumped to see a great 500 and a great season.

Martin Truex Jr. leads the first lap and Mark Martin will lead the second.

I watched some Darrell Waltrip pre race.

Crashes always shock you. I can't find Jeff Gordon. I guess he got bumped out. Hopefully they finish before the rain. I like Shell brand so we'll see where Kevin Harvick ends up.

Matt Kenseth wins a rain out. First Daytona 500 win for Jack Roush as an owner.

Well, I wasn't too happy with the way that one ended, but its nice to see Michael Waltrip get a top ten finish.

Another wasted Daytona 500 ends due to something as minor as rain. Nascar wonders why it's looseing fans. I honestly would not care so much had Matt run in the top 10 the entire race but he didn't. The Daytona 500 winner needs to be a driver that deserves the win. I'm sick of Nascar handing out wins like candy due to rain.

Wins are all that count now in Nascar cause points don't mean much anymore. Why even give out points?

What happens if the chase comes down to the last race of the season and the top 2 drivers are tied and it starts raining with 40 laps to go? Something tells me they would finish the race tomorrow if they could not restart it that day.

I think the current president of Nascar (who ever he is) needs to go and Nascar needs someone smart enough to change some of the rules and never end a race because of something so small and crazy as rain. It's like Cedar Fair runs Nascar.

As opposed to the other reasons they hand out wins for?

I listened to a bit of the race on radio while doing other things, since the "racing" isn't worth my undivided attention anymore. I was amused to hear all of the advertisements for reduced ticket prices at upcoming races.

Tanking product + tanking economy = fail.

When is Nascar going to get the hint and hold one of these in a sheltered stadium so that weather can't be a factor?

If it were to be sheltered I would see the track be the size of the Concrete Mile - Dover Speedway.

During the race I heard mention of a guy that raced at Riverside Speedway (current site of SFNE's SROS), Agawam, Mass.

If wins were all that counted, then Kyle Busch or Carl Edwards would have won the championship last year. How well you do in the chase is what counts in Nascar. I've never liked the chase because you could win all 26 regular season races and then screw up in the first two chase races and just like that you're out of the possiblity of winning a championship. All Nascar is is a crap-shoot. Period.

I can't believe how choked up Matt Kenseth was after the race. Come on Matt, you didn't win the greatest race of them all, Daytona 500. You won the Daytona 380. Surely you don't count that as a true Daytona 500 victory.

I read how he got a hookup from Harvick just like he hooked up Harvick for his 500 win. It was good to get a return there though I'm sure Harvick wanted the win too. Rain's a ***** but it can sure be a well possible end to it all. I left for an errand before the end so I eagerly looked for the result when I stopped at a restaurant last night.

Sure it's a Daytona 500 win- he was in the lead when the race was declared complete. That's the way it works. He didn't make it rain, nor did he make the decision to call the race. Besides, he's as much of a driver as you'll find in Na$car these days. He's won plenty of races, a championship and Rookie of the year.

Okay, so the Rookie of the year win was a bit bogus, since he didnt have any real competition. The only competition he had for Rookie of the Year was the same overrated talentless backmarker that took out the fastest cars in yesterday's race.

But you're spot on in your assessment of Helton- Na$car was good racing before he took over. He did make it extremely profitable, but he had to give away the integrity to accomplish that.

As an amateurish watcher at least they still had prayer to start to the race. It was good to see something different than other sports.

I don't have a problem with it in that sense. Its a decent enough idea as far as a playoff format goes. You can be the hottest team during the regular season then blow it in the post season in any other sport.

The race sucked. Between Dale Jr being a whiny little idiot and ruining 10 other drivers races and rain handing Kenseth a win that he didn't deserve, it really sucked.

Could you imagine people going deaf due to it being enclosed? Ouch my ears are bleeding. I've been to several races in Atlanta and those cars are not quiet.

Dale Jr. didn't wreck Brian Vickers. They were racing for position. The "lucky dog," that is. Vickers pushed Jr. down below the double yellow line, which sent him back up the track. At speeds that you see at Daytona, it is very easy to lose control coming up from the apron. If you don't believe me look up Dale Sr. in the 2001 Daytona 500.

You're right, a win is a win. I've been watching NASCAR for years and have seen this so many times. I was referring to Matt's Interview. He acted like he had done something big. He didn't win the 500 like the others, it was handed to him by the rain. I know he feels great about winning but surely he feels a little down that he didn't win it by actually doing the full race. He may have the trophy, but he doesn't have the honor that goes along with winning the Daytona 500.

Vickers beat Jr. to the bottom of the track and put up the block. Jr. was below the yellow line and he should have slowed down some and fell back in behind Vickers, not spun him.

Hey Racer...what about the Monster trucks being held indoors? I see plenty of people wearing ear protection there, even outside with Nascar. Just enclose the track and pit areas, let the fans weather the elements. That way, the race can be run with no interruptions, though the crashes would be a little more intensified.

That would have to be a very tall roof for every fan to see the race. You might as well enclose the entire speedway. I say just enclose every speedway and have opening roofs so if the weather is nice you can have it open. That would look amazing at Bristol.

Some tracks would be too large for something like that so leave Daytona & Dega like they area and go with the rule that every race must finish.

Right now i would like to see any race that is rained out be finished the next day. I don't care if it's 40 laps or 4 laps to the finish. Let's finish the race. Stick with that rule until every speedway in enclosed.

It may not have been intentional, but he DID cause the wreck. Keep in mind, you're talking about a truck series (maybe) talent level put into Sprint cup solely because of his name. Kyle Petty all over again.
