2009 Wimbledon tennis

Just curious to find out how many tennis fans we have on ThrillNetwork (myself included).

Wimbledon is now underway in the UK and will last for the next two weeks. Perhaps the story of the tournament is that defending champion Rafael Nadal from last year has relinquished his spot in the tour due to injury, so we will have a new champion. Perhaps the most shocking event of the year happened at the French Open earlier this month when Nadal was dethroned by a relatively unknown Swedish player and eventual finalist Robin Soderling -- remember the name, he might be heard from again. So this opens up a golden opportunity for Roger Federer, who is not only going for his sixth Wimbledon championship, but also a record-breaking 15 Grand Slam singles' titles; he also defeated Soderling in the finals of the French Open. And on the women's side, the Williams sisters try to continue their dominance at Wimbledon, having won seven of the last nine championships combined.

Only one American, Andy Roddick, left in the men's draw. The 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt of Australia is also still very much alive in the tournament.

A rematch of this past French Open championship square off in the fourth round of Wimbledon: Robin Soderling vs Roger Federer to play for a spot in the quarterfinals. Without Nadal, you'd think the pressure on Roger is ten times what it would have been to win it, but he's been very relaxed and easily knocked out his opponents to get this far....this will be his first test of the tournament, facing a guy who dethroned his arch-rival earlier this month.

Roger Federer has gotten past Robin Soderling again (second time this month) in the Wimbledon fourth round. The Serbian Novak Djokovic has advanced and will face the German Tommy Haas in the Quarterfinals.

Perhaps the most feel-good story of Wimbledon is the 17-year-old American player Melanie Oudin of Georgia who is playing in her first Wimbledon, and just knocked out a former World's #1 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia in the third round on the women's bracket.

Surprise, Surprise! It's yet another all-Williams finals round to determine Wimbledon ladies champiomship.

The three-time defending champion Venus Williams will defend her crown against her sister Serena; this will be the fourth (4th) time in Wimbledon history both William sister square off for the title (2002, 2003, 2008, and 2009), and the second time in a row. Either one has will have won a combined eight (8) Wimbledons this decade!

This will also be the 8th overall all-William finals in all of the Grand Slams: (2003 Australian Open, 2002 French Open, and 2001 & 2002 US Open were the others)

Roger Federer beats Andy Roddick in the championship round in a classic multi-hour match that went the distance. Federer won his sixth (6th) Wimbledon in the last seven years and appeared in seven finals in a row; he has beaten Roddick in three of the Wimbledon finals (today included). This also made history as Federer has toppled Pete Sampras as the career leader for the most Grand Slam championships with 15 titles.

So this wraps up the two weeks of Wimbledon, and the US Open tennis is just around the corner, coming up next month.
