October - NHL

The NHL season kicked off tonight with four marquee match ups:

Capitals vs. Bruins
Canadiens vs. Maple Leafs
Sharks vs. Avalanche
Flames vs. Canucks

Ovechkin got things going with a 4 point game: 2 goals and 2 assists. He's deadly and made the Bruins pay for any and all turnovers they committed in their own zone. The Canadiens pulled off some OT magic from Josh Gorges (Former Shark). The Sharks stunk it up with sloppy puck management and let the Avalanche cruise to a win on Joe Sakic's retirement night. Lastly, Calgary put 5 past Luongo.

So, time to make some predictions puck heads, who do you think is going to be post season champs and who's going to be chumps?

My Predictions:

East:
1. Capitals
2. Flyers
3. Bruins
4. Canadiens
5. Hurricanes
6. Penguins
7. Devils
8. Maple Leafs

East Champions: Flyers

West:
1. Sharks
2. Blackhawks
3. Red Wings
4. Canucks
5. Flames
6. Ducks
7. Blue Jackets
8. Blues

West Champions: Blackhawks

Stanley Cup Finals: Blackhawks vs. Flyers, Flyers in 6.

Some crazy stuff going on here, but hey, it can happen. Who do you pick?

I don't want to make any predictions per-se, but this Capitals team looks fantastic right now. The only question mark is in goal. Theodore is in a contract year, but Varlamov and Neuvirth are in a position to overtake for the starting spot at all times.

It should be interesting in the East. I think the Caps could go all the way, but I also don't want to jinx it, hehe.

I think the Blackhawks will come from the West, though.

edit: my playoff spots:
East:
1. Devils
2. Capitals
3. Canadiens
4. Flyers
5. Penguins
6. Carolina
7. Rangers
8. Maple Leafs

West:
1. Blackhawks
2. Calgary
3. Ducks
4. Sharks
5. Canucks
6. Blue Jackets
7. Blues
8. Wild

I've been seeing in the newsprint the Flyers being predicted to be in the middle of the Top 10.

Suddenly it hit me today that the regular season starts for us down in Raleigh versus the Canes.

It did not hit me til last night that Ray Emery is black. That's just as cool as when we had Donald Brashear.

I'm finally watching Flyers-Devils. We have that channel this time.

Leafs have a nice defensive line up this season, but I don't know if I would count them in for a playoff spot just yet. I think they still got some building to do before they make another playoff run.

I really don't know what my predictions are, but I am hoping the Caps take the cup this season.

First time that the Blue Jackets are 2-0. Looks like they are playing well early. See how things play out.

Great game by the Thrashers. Kovy and the rest of the team looked amazing tonight. 2-0 for them now. They are a completely different team than the first half of last year.

We got our first loss of the season vs. the Penguins in our house 5-4. Not a good day for sports in Philly.

Article about rising ticket prices

I find it really sad that the Leafs can suck so much yet fans will still allow MLSE to raise ticket prices by 10.2% and still pay to see them.

Welcome to San Jose Dany Heatley! On Thursday nights home opener against the Blue Jackets Dany Heatley tallied a hat trick and an assist in his HP Pavilion debut. Joe Thornton had 5 assists. The Sharks first line is definitely deadly.

I think the best part of the season so far is how bad the Leafs are playing. It is quite amusing how the fans thought they would be so great going into the season, and now it is just a train wreck.

And yet we still sell out the ACC. Amazing, isn't it?

The Flyers are in Florida on a team building retreat before they return to action against the Panthers.

Listening to NY radio on my way back from Mass it sound impressive the Devils beat the Caps in OT.

Just to add something else about edh's Leaf comment. After talking with a few Toronto fans, nobody was really expecting them to do great this season. They see it more as a hopeful turn around season with Burke at the helm.

In other news, the mayor of Quebec City has recently met with NHL commissioner about bringing the Nordiques back to the city. People are pretty optimistic about it since plans for a new arena are rumored to be announced very soon, and Bettman says he's up for it if a team is for sale (with some teams struggling in some US markets, one will be).

Go to HFBoards - NHL Message Board and Forum for National Hockey League and you will see otherwise. Just go back a few pages before the ones about how everyone now hates the team and wants everyone fired.

I read all 7 pages of the "Winless in Toronto" thread and it seems like the only people bashing Toronto are non Toronto fans. Most of the Toronto fans actually seem to be backing up the team and pointing out facts like
Quote:
Last year the Flyers started the season winless in their first 6 and finished the season with 99 points. The Ducks last year started the season 1-5 and made it to the 2nd round. It's been done before...tones of games left.
Not that I'm defending the Leafs (I'm more of a Wings fan), I'm just saying it really looks like Toronto fans are behind their team while everyone else bashes them.

What's the difference between a triangle and the Leafs?
A triangle has 3 points.

What's the difference between the Leafs and man who promised his wife he won't drink for the next 8 months?
The man can look forward to a draft next summer.

What does a tampon and the Leafs have in common?
They're only good for one period.

What does a TV Evangelist priest and the Leafs have in common?
They can both make 20,000 people stand up and yell "Jesus Christ!"

Been to 2 Ducks games this season, and man do they stink. 5-0 loss to the Blues, and and 4-3 loss to the Stars.

They might be able to get it together over the season, but right now they're getting overmatched by speed, and they can't seem to organize plays. You'd think Selanne would be able to pull it together, but right now its really hard to watch them play.

Yeah, West Coast NHL representation, I know, but I love hockey and the Ducks are the best I got...

Thanks for talking down on the Sharks and the West sister. The Sharks beat the Flyers today.
