| Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics
For the first time in world history, South America will finally host the Olympic Games. The 2016 Summer Olympic Games -- Games of the XXXI Olympiad -- will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Olympics have never been hosted in South America. Rio de Janeiro beat out Madrid, Spain in the final vote; Tokyo, Japan came in third place. I just saw the final annoucement live on cable, and even I got goosebumps waiting in anticpation for who will be selected. Congratulations to Rio, to Brazil, and to South America; they will get their shot at what they can do and offer to the world.

Chicago was the first one voted out. Obama needs to worry about running the nation, not about brining the Olympics to Chicago.

Jimmy, no mention of Chicago? I laugh at my home city. Our mayor has no idea what he's doing and has destroyed our city. We're now an embarassment to the country and the world. If anyone asks me where I live in Illinois, I'll tell them "the suburbs".

And bringing the Olympics to Chicago isn't worrying about our nation? Chicago is his hometown, I would have been all over it too... of course, the Republicans whine about he has more important things to worry about- so do they... it's called staying relevant in 21st century America... but that is another story altogether. No surprise, the IOC is against the U.S. hosting the Olympics again for some time- the panel is biased as all get out... plus, since South America has never hosted the Games, no one was gonna beat them anyway, no matter how great their plan was.

And just a FYI, the U.S., at least compared to other nations, has hosted the Olympics a LOT in the past decade or two: Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City. To be honest, I like seeing the varying fan bases in different countries, like watching a bunch of Asians go nuts for Michael Phelps and Kobe Bryant.

The Savior couldn't do it for us. Anyway my first choice was Rio when I heard South America has never hosted it. I was surprised. Of course I want them to get it over us. Chicago was my second choice.

My point behind my claim that the IOC panel is biased is that there is alot of bad blood going on between the IOC and the U.S. Olympic Committee and Chicago was it's victim- I didn't expect them to win, but to come in last was a huge surprise.

| The funny part about this is that the person you're going after with this comment is a democrat. Some people just tend to put the country before their party.

Brian, I wasn't directing that at anyone on this board in particular, I had heard the GOP Quartet singing it all day on the news... like we all don't know our country is in bad straits and need to be reminded everyday.

| coasterlove, I honestly was not aware of Chicago's placement when they announced it, but I know now. I didn't mean to leave them out. When I first tuned on, it was down to Madrid, Rio, and Tokyo. And keep your head up about your home town and be proud of it like you always are. Chicago was definitely worthy or they wouldn't have made it this far. And who knows, maybe they might the city back in the 2020 bid. They definitely have the infrastructure and resources to host something like this. And here is a fun fact: Chicago won the bid to host the 1904 Olympics Games, which was later hosted in St. Louis. Also, let's all leave the political rants out of this topic. Granted, politics does have some effect, but this isn't the place to rant about how Obama's administration. And let's all get ready for Vancouver hosting the winter games in just a few months.

Chicago would have been cool, but I am glad Rio won. That was definitely my first choice. And now we get to hear Portuguese on TV.

I like Conan's line about Rio, a topless Olympics. He showed a clip of shaking bottoms advertising Rio 2016.

Here is an interesting piece of bidding history: The city of Detroit, Michigan probably holds the record for the most consecutive failed bid attempts without any success. Detroit made it to the finals in the bids for the 1944, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, and 1972 Olympics and came up empty after eight attempts in a row; they have since not attempted any further bids. The city of Denver, Colorado was formally awarded the 1976 Winter Olympic Games, but its citizens later rejected the successful bid due to skyrocketing costs to host the games and the public voted against raising funds to finance.

Personally I was all for Chicago getting the Olympics because I know by 2016 Illinois will STILL be in debit and we could use the tax revenues!

I was at the Houston airport today, and I met a Brazilian passenger who is from Rio, and as you'd expect, he was extremely ecstatic about his home town hosting the Olympics. He was connecting in Houston to fly back to his home in Rio. I asked him if he is planning on attending the games, and he said he hoped to participate in one of the water events. I really hope he gets to represent his country, then I can tell people I have met a future Olympic athlete. I, for one, am happy for the city of Rio de Janeiro that they will get their chance to shine in the world spotlight. I found a good travel video clip on Rio. Maracană stadium This will be is their Olympic stadium to be used for the opening and closing ceremonies. http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=4526051 Here was the official IOC annoucement awarding the city of Rio de Janeiro.
