The double life

I bet you are wondering what in the world this is going to be like.

I'm just curious if you've ran into people out in the "real world" that you knew first online and found out they are totally different in person?

I know several people (I'll refrain from naming names) that online you might think they are a jerk but if you met them you'd find them to be pretty cool. And no I'm not just talking people from TN, I post on several other forums.

This doesn't have to be all negative either, like you see someone online and they seem nasty, but in person they are nice.

Is this something you've run into?

I've been around xbadx and topdrag at Valleyfair!. Not that they're jerks on the site, but they seemed like great guys, from what I saw.

I admit that I'm living a 'double life' here. I'm a total loudmouth on forums and chats but I'm really quiet in person.

I haven't met up with anyone that I consider a jerk on the internet. People that I have met in person are pretty cool, nothing to complain about there.

^^Same here. I'm very quiet in the real world. I keep to myself.
I'm definately more introverted than extraverted.

OK, I knew Wes online first, then met him in person. I think my paranoia just got a 300hp blast of nitrous.

^well thats just scary.

I must admit I too am living a "double life" as well to go along with all my other personalities in the real world. In the real world I am very shy, not at all talkative and I have terrible social skills. I would like to think that I have made a few people laugh on this site by making some jokes, but in real life I couldn't come up with a good joke on the spot to save my life. This website has and continues to be a wonderful way to help me out with my terrible self in the real world.

I have to say that it was very cool finally meeting coasterlove and Drewbie for my first time this spring; it was great and almost surreal at first sight, especially with the three of us having been with TN for five years and counting. This is my personal opinion of them:

As great of friend as coasterlove has been to me online, he is even cooler to meet in person and just a great person to hang out with, especially since we have several common interests; although he can have his quirks at times (in a good way), but a great person to know nonetheless.

Drewbie....I was kind of nervous right before first meeting him during a late night dinner meet, because I never could imagine what he is like in person. Prior to meeting each other, we have only directly interacted on an on-and-off basis -- some were good (like discussing our plans for the meet) and a few others were kind of bumpy (especially on Swillnetwork). But once coasterlove and I sat down with him, all that changed.....he was great to meet in person....very outgoing and a lot more open-minded than he seemed to be on TN, SN, and AIM; his wife Jessica, whom most of us have briefly been indirectly introduced to when Drew announced his wedding plans on here, was also a very pleasant surprise to meet in person as well. I felt like I had made another quality friendship with them. Now, I have always wondered what coasterlove's interaction with him has been like before that weekend.

It was also cool meeting our moderating team leader Kyle Rehm during that weekend, although he was only able to hang out with us for a few hours at the park. I met another fellow mod Byron last year at SFOT's Lone Star Coasterthon.....he's just seems to be as quiet in person as he appears on TN if not even quiter, but still cool to meet in person.

As for myself, as coasterlove might confirm, my personality is exactly the same on TN or AIM as I am in person. I have no alter-ego or a double life; this is just how I am in person.

You know the funny thing about TN is that it really helped me to come out of my shell in a lot of ways in the real world.

Because I found a place here where I could express my opinion and find out that I'm usually not alone in that opinion it helped a lot when I felt like I had something to say, I usually say it.

I'm a lot more talkative in the real world than I ever was as a teen.

But I'm also more likely to pick a fight on TN or the internet in general than I am in real life. lol

Thanks Jimmy. I know I come off as kindof a jerk at times on here, but I can honestly tell you that not many people that know me in real life could say they dislike me. I'm opinionated, no doubt, and I have strong feelings about things, but most of the time it's my sarcasm that both convey's my points and makes those I'm fighting with laugh. Unfortunately, sarcasm is hard to sense through words on a message board.

So to the people I met from here and other message boards. Jimmy was exactly as he is on here. I great guy and a veritable fountain of information. He had encyclopedia like knowledge of a vast array of subject. He fell right in with the rest of the crew I had brought with and we all were able to have a great time together.

Coasterlove wasn't at all what I expected. Through our heated political discussions, I wouldn't have figured that a person I would describe as an untra-conservative was gonna show up with a shaved head and basketball jersey. Didn't fit my mental image at all. Through our talks on the forums we knew we disagreed on many topics, but we also both respected each other alot. He fit right in as well. A laid back guy and a fun time to be around.

In addition to the guys from TN, through playing World of Warcraft, I've formed bonds with people from my guild that are from all over the United States. I've been fortunate enough to travel around and meet a good chunck of them as well. I flew out to visit some of them a few months back, not having ever met them outside the game. They've since then become some of my best friends. Some of them met me for the first time on the very same Six Flags trip where I met Jimmy and C-love. As they can attest, we all had a great time and everyone was very normal and fun to be around.

I'm kinda shy on forums and stuff because I don't know people and on most forums people just stick to their friends that they already have on the site so it's kinda hard sometimes to makes friends on them....but in the real world I'm the hyper crazy clemson/chuck norris obsessed kid hehe.

Yeah it must be strange to meet people you have known here for 5 years, and then suddenly meet them.

Well I hope to get to CP/SFGAV/BGW next summer so maybe some TN members will be around. I would have gone this summer but I went to Asia instead (which was great). But next summer I'm determined to go to the US parks.

Did you make it to India during your tour of Asia?

I was there for almost a month -- from mid-December to mid-January -- to visit both my parents' (their respective) hometowns. We spent over half of the time at my father's native villiage for the tour and dedication of a brand new house which replaced the old one where he grew up in. We also went sightseeing around the northern part of India and saw many of the historic architecture including the world famous Taj Mahal (truely a sight to behold in person).

Check out some of the picture we took and let me know what you think of them:

I have a gal pal on a work related site. After talking to her online for business stuff I gave her a call to shoot the breeze. Yes old saying meaning just to gab. She was so different even over the phone then her online personality. I met a bunch of ya at PKI but since I missed the afterword lunch I don't really know what names go with the faces. Yes its a shock when you first hear someone's voice and meet them.

I should have been clearer, I didn't tour Asia, I just went travelling around Thailand for 5 weeks. Sightseeing and sitting on beaches mainly, and a weeks scuba diving (amazing experience, with the coral reefs). It was just a random holiday after finishing 2nd year of university.

I would love to go to India, not sure when it'll be, theres so many places to go. When I graduate I'll have more money to do these things, but it's expensive (a plane ticket from London to Bangkok cost over $800 alone, the whole trip cost me nearly $3000 - doesn't sound a lot, but it's a lot for a full time student ). I did fly over India though, but didn't get to stop there I might even have a photo of India - from 40,000ft lol.
