| Fun Spot Park 6/09/02 Date: Sunday, 6/09/02
Weather: Sunny, Hot, Humid
Fun "Speck" is more like it.
We pulled up to this place and were surprised to find the parking lot 3/4 full. Yup, around 50 cars.
It isn't so much an amusement park as it is a pasture on which someone dumped some old decrepit rides in the middle of the night. It seems to be popular with the locals.
It has lots of open grassy areas and a few young trees providing next to no shade.
We visited their zoo and were pained to see animals in horribly small, cramped, antiquated cages in stifling heat.
After leaving the zoo, it became amusing to wander around the park and realize how the zoo cage theme carried throughout the park. Each ride was surrounded by chain link fence. Most weren't operating for lack of riders, but the operators perched lifeless inside their "pen" avoiding the sun under their festive umbrellas.
It didn't seem that any of the employees were having fun. Perhaps they all had hangovers.
The ride selection was minimal. However, they had some old classics: flying scooters, a round-up with carnival lights to spare, and a troika. If this is the beginning of something for this area, good luck and keep striving forward. If this is a long-revered local attraction, it is time to move to another town.
I admit it was HOT HOT HOT with humidity to match and I was anxious to get back in the car and go home. I was forewarned not to expect much, but I had expected more than I got. My apologies to the owners. We were happy to pay our $13/each to get in and hope it goes toward the "new ride" fund.
The Coasters (rated 1 - 10 10=best):
The Afterburner (3)
After climbing the 6 flights (or was it 4? It felt like 8.) to the launch area, we battled vertigo and heatstroke. The train sat sitting in the station faded and looking like it was one of the first coaster trains ever built. Apparently this ride was the original Arrow prototype for their shuttle loop - except that, when it originally operated, guests were whisked to the launch platform by elevator. THERE WAS A REASON FOR THE ELEVATOR AND IT WAS NOT LUXURY. We got in the train and were cable launched into the loop. I felt very nauseous on this looper. I think I have become accustomed to the high velocity entry into loops that make them fun. This ride kind of nudged you into it and seemed to be in "loop" mode for an excessive amount of time. The major attraction of this ride is simply seeing what a huge contraption it is and seeing how far coaster technology has come in 25 years.
Zyklon (0)
Ever look at a ride and think, "oh look they're tearing that old thing down". That's what I thought when I saw this "thing" sitting in the field all faded and neglected. Then, I saw a car operating on it. Having no shame about ading a coaster to my track list, I got in the queue and awaited my fate. Although there were two cars on the track, the one with riders in it had to complete its course before the second one could be loaded. We got in after the other car finished and set off on our ride. Over the shouder restraints seemed silly on this 38 foot high ride with minimal drops and no inversions. It wasn't until the end, when the ride operator had to jump on the front of the car and use the leverage of his body to stop the thing, that I understood the need for the safety restraints.
If your a coaster enthusiast, you MUST visit this park. If you are a parent with children, you should skip it. If you are a parent with children you do not like, spend the day.
