Cali here i come.

Ok it's a bit advance notice but it's a big trip (the biggest coaster trip i have ever taken) and i need to start planning far in advance.

I will be visiting California for 10 days in 2006 and i'm makeing stops at:

Knott's Berry Farm
Six Flags Magic Mountain
Six Flags Marine World
Paramount's Great America
Disneyland
Disney's Califorina Adventure
Universal Studios Hollywood.

I have yet to decide on a month to go because i need a few question answered.

Right now i got the flight & rental car covered so don't need any info on that but like i said i need to decide on a month to go.

Other info needed:

What time of the year are all parks open and open all week?

What is the best month to go to avoid large crowds at all parks?

Best hotels in between each park to stay at under $70?

What order should i do the parks?

Where are some good places to eat around the parks?

What coasters/rides should i hit first at each park?

Will all coasters be open @ SFMM? I thought i heard some don't run on specific days.

Do i need to set aside more than one day for any of the parks?

Thats about all i can think of now but i'm sure more will come to me, i am a bit tired right now.

I can only help you out on Knott's and Magic Mountain, as those are my two home parks and I am relatively familiar with both of those, and not so much with the NorCal parks. Knott's is open daily everday of the year except Christmas Day and Magic Mountain goes into weekend only operation starting I believe October. Go to their website www.sixflags.com/parks/magicmountain to double check your visit days.

You're in luck because crowds are usually not problematic this time of the year in Southern California. Wait times should not be something to fear!

With Knott's, I would recommend the Knott's Berry Farm Resort Hotel only because it is so convenient to be staying at a hotel owned by the park - it's literally RIGHT NEXT to the park (if you get a room on the North side of the hotel, you can get a spectacular view of the park). As with Magic Mountain, there are countless numbers of motels/hotels that are down the Interstate 5 by a few minutes. Do a search, I trust the information you're looking for will come up quickly.

Where are some good places to eat around the parks?
At Knott's Berry Farm, Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant serves delicious food and is WORLD FAMOUS, so be sure to make an attempt to dine there. It's not inside the park, but in the California Marketplace shopping center outside the park gates. The park also offers the newly and recently opened TGI Fridays restaurant that sports the restaurant chain's new look and is only steps outside and away from the park's entrance.

Inside the park, there's the 1950's diner styled Coasters restaurant (like at Cedar Point), so if you haven't been to one, give it a shot. Knott's also has other good eating, such as in the Ghost Town themed area where they serve grilled and BBQ ribs and other tasty entree items for a good price for what you get.

As for Magic Mountain, I advise you to eat outside of the park 'cause most of the food served inside there is generic (fries, cheesburgers and chicken tenders), except for a few locations that serve unique food items (for example: Laughing Dragon Co. and Mooseburger Lodge). But if you have to eat inside the park (since the park is so big and when you're hungry and at the back of the park, that treck to the front of the park and then to the parking lot will kill you) they have a Panda Express inside the park if you have a taste for Chinese grub, but it is definitely overpriced. Be sure to bring a backpack with a lot of snack items and water/beverages so you don't waste your money on the $3.00 frozen lemonades in a medium sized cup.

What coasters/rides should i hit first at each park?
At this time of the year, crowds are nothing to worry about, so don't rush to the rides you think will have the longest lines. However, X and Deja Vu at Magic Mountain should be made priority "first rides" due to both rides nature to load and unload riders slowly because of the loading platform and unique seating setup.

Knott's coaster tips - GhostRider picks up and maintains queue waits faster and longer than any other coaster in the park so that should be your first priority once you pass the turnstiles at the front gate. And on the flipside, Xcelerator rarely has that many people waiting in line for it. I've been to the park on summer days where Boomerang has more people waiting in line than there are people waiting in line for Xcelerator.

That's a rumor. X used to close on Wednesdays for maintenance, but that was quite awhile ago. All coasters at Magic Mountain should be operating when you visit except for Flashback. However, due to the construction of the new 2006 B&M coaster up on the hill, Revolution and Ninja may be closed during your visit. But I can't gauranteed anything to you. There are some circumstances that can occur out of the park's control when you visit, causing closure. This is true of any park you plan to visit, including Knott's. Xcelerator has been known to be down for an entire day at a time, which could happen, but don't worry about that, it has a much better reliability factor than Ka or Dragster

Knott's Berry Farm can be thoroughly enjoyed in a single day (meaning multiple repeat rides on the large attractions, as it is a considerably small park), and you most likely will not need an additional day there. However, there is a possibility you may find that you'll need two days at Magic Mountain.

Great tips though, Thanks but what month is the less crowded between March & June?

Oh whoops. I didn't catch that. Well, some of that information should be valuable to you, but information about crowdiness is all based on what time of year you go next year. June sees the start of the summer season and the heavy rise in tourists and park patronization. Your best bet is to visit in the month of March or April, although we get our most rain in those two months. Do a weather checkup a week prior to your arranged trip. I don't want it to rain while you're on a coastering trip.

Spring.

I don't want to be caught in the summer heat walking around parks all day for 7-8 straight days.

The SoCal summer heat really is not that bad, contrary to what some out-of-staters might believe. We don't have the grotesque humidity like some of the other "hot" states. The heat is warm, but not untolerable - a t-shirt, boardshorts, and a pair of sandals will keep you pretty comfortable all day.

Magic Mountain and Knott's are well-shaded parks with heavy landscaping (not so much Knott's Berry Farm anymore, though), so the summer heat shouldn't be a factor!

Thats good to know. I guess that can widen my time to go between March & July now as i have other plans after between july & Oct to visit 10 other parks across the country.

To the best of your knowledge what month (March-July) would be the best month to visit. How are crowds in these months and is school still in?

Hmmm. I'd say your safest bet (given weather and tourist influx patterns), I'd say May or June.

At SFMW, I would recomend eattign at the Carls Junior down the road. If you want to eat in the park, the cheese breadsticks are good (only a dollar each) and the cookies are a good value too. (3 for $2)

Thanks Chris. I was really wanting to go in May but any month would do. May it is .

I will more than likely eat outside the park since i rarely if ever eat at a park. Thanks.

If you have time stop in at the Santa Monica Pier its allways nice out on the water. Plus if you collect coaster memorbillia you can buy lift hill chain links at one of the gift shops. Also dont know if you are into nature stuff but a trip by the Sequa/Kings Canyon National parks where the giant trees are is a blast. Also Bonfanta Gardens is a great little park if you have time as its on the way to PGA.

The best month to go would be May, as the Cali schools are not out for the Summer yet. Last time when I went in May, the parks were dead. I wouldn't expect June to be that much worse.

I tried to plan a may week but i had too much going on so the week in june is the best time for me. Hopefully crowds wont be to bad.

I would love to do some sightseeing but it's a very limited vacation.

My flight arrives at LAX at 6:45pm Friday night. I'm spending the first two days (sat & sun) at SFMM and i might head over to SFMM when i arrive in cali fri night. Could be fun to get a few extra hours.

My last park is SFMW and as soon as the park closes i head to the hotel to get some sleep before the long trip back to LA to catch my flight sunday @ 6pm.

I HIGHLY Recomend going to napa and eating at the best damn pizza place in nor cal. The new york pizza kitchen! The best pizza i have ever had!

to ride?

try hitting medusa first since it is the most popular ride.
Other then that?
cobra second just cuz its right next to it
kong third then Dinosphere or what ebre the heck its called now.
Then Boomerang and so on and so on to follow a circle around the park.
