Story of the Year Concert 10/12

Well it's about 50mins to 9:30 as I start this trip report, and I figure by the end, CP will have announced their Screaming Swing. I really can't believe I actually got up. I had to set the alarm, and I'm really just running on adrenaline, frappacinos, and other heresay substances.

Alright, alright. I've been a little short on coaster trips this year, so you're going to have to spot a concert trip report. Now I know this has never been done, so work with me on this.

I awoke at 3PM in the back of a Leaps n' Bounds with a torch in one hand and sign in the other that read, "Safe Child's Play Area?" on one side, and "That's.... Debateable." on the other. It was then I realized that today was going to be the day of the Story of the Year concert at the Majestic Theatre on Woodward Ave. So I called up TA2KX, and we headed out 2 hours before the doors would open.

We actually arrived at the Majestic Theatre about 4:30. The doors were scheduled to open at 6. So we waited in line with about 25 other people. While in line... we had some strange encounters. Now this is no regular area, this is close to the heart of Detroit City. Such as one guy approached the line yelling out random things, claiming "hey, there ain't nothin' wrong with speakin', ya hear." Then he proceed to yell at the line for spare change. Then there was the lady who personally walked to every person in the line and asked for money, though when someone offered her food, she turned it down. Then there was the king. This one guy comes up to us selling a USB Port Connector, a Dell System Restore Disk, and a Power Drill that had no drill bits and no battery pack. You had to give the guy a round of applause for originality. We also talked with a band named Seventh Echo, who's looking to get their band known, and bought their CD for $1.

Finally at 6 o'clock, we were let into the building and positioned ourselves, front and center, in the second line of people. Well then we waited, and waited, and watched some people tune the instruments on stage. We tried to amuse ourselves with coaster talk, I still feeling that El Toro will be better than Voyage, and so on. Well an hour later at 7, the first band comes out. I don't remember their name, but that's probably because I don't want to. The lead singer was terrible. He kept licking this guys ear. I just kept saying, "WTF" and "No sir". It was boring and the whole crowd, instead of booing him off stage, merely looked back, not moving, with blank faces. In the last song, "I am Hollywood", it picked up a little and at one point during the song the lead pointed to one group of people and said something inaudible. Now I'm not certain what he said, but he did not say start a mosh pit. Well everyone was so bored, they did it anyway. I stood back on this one to scout the crowd to see who were the key big guys to keep clear from.

The second band came out and they were actually pretty good. Once their music started going, the crowd started hoping. Soon the whole mass of people of the middle were shifting side to side. That kick started the moshing, and I turned around to see TA2KX, bulldozing a kid across the pit. I get in there and just seek out random targets. I did fair, except for some kid deciding to ninja chop me in the neck. There was some girls too, that seemed small and meek, but were right there shoving the boys. It settled down eventually and we got back to the music.

Then the third band, Funeral for a Friend, came out. Same thing, we kept moshing, and jumping to the music. And I was just standing there, and out of nowhere I get a blow to the back of my head. I turned around trying to figure out what hit me and it was a body. The crowd surfing had started. I hoisted the person up and they were carried to the front. This happened again, so I decided to back away to the people that were hoisting people up. I faught the crowd until I found a couple of guys smoking the reefer and launching people into the crowd. One of the guys left, so I decided to help out. I just looked at people and say "You wanna go?" Then I grab their left foot, while the other guy grabbed their right, and we launched people on top of the crowd. The other guy came back, and they asked if I wanted to go. "F yeah!". So I get my feet up and catapult into the hands of the crowd. It was just an amazing feeling being carried away. I was being carried by my stomach, flicking everything off, yelling "F this concert!" I went head first over the gate into the hands of two guards. I thanked them for not letting me die and made my way back into the crowd.

It was now time for Story of the Year, and to give you an idea, it was now 9:45. At this time I was out of energy. But Story of the Year had a great performance, singing songs off their new album that just came out 2 days ago. When they sang Anthem of our Dying Day, the crowd just went crazy. Everyone screamed as they held a microphone a foot from our grasp. At one point the lead singer jumped on the gate and sang and then everyone shifted forward to grab him, and then he just crowd surfed, while still screaming the song. That was my favorite song played and it was great because everyone just went crazy. After that they remixed it with "Livin' on a Prayer" Everyone yelled...
"OOOOOOoooooooooOOOOOOO we're half way there, OOOOOooOoOooo, were livin' on a prayer!"
and then the song looped and it went back to the refrain and went it got back to "OOOOOooooooooOOOOOO" They stopped playing and singing and the O went from "OOOoooOOO" to "OoOoOoOoOoOoO" you here on Maury when he says "Brandon you are not the father!"
At 11:00 they finished the concert with "Until the Day I Die". At this point everyone gathered the little energy they had and just unleashed. Everyone was jumping, the moshing was extremely intense, the whole crowd would shift every which way, everyone was screaming the song, it was amazing. And at the end of it all, the lead singer took his water bottle and threw it into the crowd. It was the perfect ending to a perfect concert when I was the one who caught that water bottle.

We left completely out of energy, brusied from moshing, and unable to hear, but I you know I'd do it all again, just give me a few weeks to recover.
Story of the Year Concert 9.5/10

you forgot something,

i walked back to my car before the doors opened so I could drop off the Seventh Echo EP I bought, and on the way there this african american man stopped me and intently showed me his baseball cap, claiming that "Nate" signed it, pointing at the sharpie signature. All I could say was: Nate? Who's Nate?? Then the man proceeded to point with his thumb over to his caucasian buddy chillaxing against an E-van. That dude just stood there wit his arms crossed and nodded his head with a slight-Mmm-hmm. Then he asked for a cigarette. No!! So I kept walkingto my car, whh-what have we hear, sadwoman again!, "Pwweasszh, jussshaa spaare chAAAAnnge!!" BAHHHH!!! HERE'S 26 cents, shut up and leave me alone. I toss the CD into the car and walk back, and yeah I pass that woman again, yeah believe it, she asked me again, then she realized already gave her money, that was 34 seconds lady, it takes a whole lotta cocaine to not remember 34 seconds ago. Ohhh Ohh!!! Who do I pass next, yet again? Yeah? Now this time he doesn't try to show me Nate's glorious work again, he just flat out asks me for the cigarette out of my mouth. You know, likely all these people really weren't that poor, it was 60* with a light mist, and they ALL had decent coats! Now, I didn't see one of these people with children walking around, now that I can donate to; but you know? I never will have to because Detroit is one of the greediest, most selfish cities out there. And as I've said in the past, I'll say again, Attitude reflects leadership.
