SFOT - June 23... well this was my very first Six Flags park, and I was very pleased all across the board.
After qualifying to the national debate tournament in Grapevine-Colleyville, TX, (outside Dallas), I was very pleased to hear that the national opening ceremony would be held at SFOT. As much as I had heard of, and played (RCT2) of this park, I was excited to see if Six Flags was all it had been (in)famously branded to be. This was a very short trip, and I rode very few rides, but got a good view of the atmosphere, crowds, and all around feel of the original park.
We drove in, and the maps were huge. The park had its own gas station! The parking lot was very long and not well organized, but the views of the park were amazing. We eneded up parking half a mile from the entrance. Word to the wise: DONT TAKE THE TRAM. we made a good choice in that we arrived about 20 minutes before the train was even in sight of the entrance. It's very slow and not worth it. The temperature was about 106 degrees outside, in true Texas fashion, and my North Carolinian self was not used to it. The entrance was nice, the very long covered terrace thing seemed a little pointless to me, but once inside, I was amazed. This park is much better themed then Carowinds. Much. We walked through Spain, and I was amazed to see very well themed buildings and stores, shops and rides. The park was very clean and efficient, despite what looked like huge crowds throughout.
We went straight to Titan, and all of the signage was very helpful to find the ride. Sort of in an annexed section of the park by itself, Titan dominates the skyline. It's beautiful first drop disappearing behind the trees, I saw the long line for Texas Giant and became worried about the line we would incur. It was very long, through the whole lower queue and moving out towards the tea-cup type ride next door. Admiring two train operation but wishing there was three, I looked up at the beast and thought how awesome my first real hyper would be like.
After about 60 min, and thanks to the shaded line btw- i wouldn't have survived otherwise, we were climbing the stairs to the queue house. Being the ride at SFOT, i chose to wait for the front. It took about 20 more minutes then the other seats, because they added a third train (not six flags like at all, is it?!). The restraints were comfortable, and the train more open then i thought gianvola's were.
Cresting the lift hill, the fast paced, loud chain abrubtly seemed to slow down, careening over the edge. I was absolutely thrilled, looking down two hundred fifty feet and knowing i would be 75 miles per hour plus at the bottom of the tunnel. Hands up, I braced for the famed vertical g's at the bottom and I was impressed. It was the best feeling in the world. G's that made my hands drop and pushed me deep into my seat. More then a B&M old standup. As it crested the overbank, I looked over my shoulder and along with my teammates cheered on the next leg. The descent down was fun again, but up next was "the" airtime hill and man did it deliver! Out of my seat the entire time. The helix was super powerful. I mean super. it yanked us up, and into the MCBR, which unfortunately stopped the train. As upset as I was about this loss in momentum, the next leg freaked me out. As we were going very slow, there was a sharp change in banking that left me hanging over the side of the train, and I suddenly realized how open these cars actually were. The lower section of Titan is fun and also has its vertical g's.. and although there was no 'straight airtime' besides that one hill, the banking and heavy positive g's more then made up for it. It was incredible.
9/10
Up next (and soon probably) I'll talk about gotham city, batman, superman, and the buffet...
