| Maxx Pass Trip (Day 1: Part 1) Geauga Lake I’m still on my big summer trip going to all the Cedar Fair parks in Ohio and Michigan, but I figure I should get caught up in my trip reports before actually being done so all the details are still fresh in my head.
Our trip started Wednesday, driving out to Ohio where we would be staying the night about 7 miles away from our first stop, Geauga Lake. The next day we arrived at Geauga Lake a little bit after opening, after signing in with our Kings Dominion Maxx Passes we made our way into the park. It was extremely nice walking into a park with little security checking my bags and such. The park has a very attractive entrance, in general the park is nice looking and extremely clean.
First we walked over to Thunderhawk. They were only running one train all day. I had to wait one train to ride in the front seat, I was flabbergasted! A SMOOTH Vekoma SLC?! I had heard good things about this coaster, but I was in disbelief that it was really SO smooth. I didn’t bang my head one time. The inversions are extremely fun and in general it’s a good ride. I just wish ALL the SLCs could be this smooth. I give it 8 out of 10.
Next up was Dominator. I had very high expectations for this ride; it looked like it could become my new favorite B&M floorless. They were running two trains and I walked right on the front seat. The first drop is fantastic, extremely smooth and steep. The vertical loop is also lots of funs as you get loads of hang time at the top. In general it’s a good coaster with a neat layout. It’s very different from your normal B&M layout with some exciting high speed turns thrown in. Unfortunately it is quite a bit bumpy throughout the ride for a B&M. The trains have a lot of vibrating that shakes you up throughout the ride. It’s still a fun time, though. I give it 8.5 out of 10. Deffinitely not as good as Kraken or Medusa @ SFGAdv, IMO.
After Dominator we went on the Beaver Creek Mine Ride, I think I have that name right… In any case, it was a decent little family ride with a one train wait. I rode in the back row by myself and got some surprising laterals throughout the ride. I also thought it was neat that they send you around for two circuits. I give it 6 out of 10.
We were going to go on Villain next but as we were walking into the line a bunch of people were exiting telling us that someone got sick on the ride. So instead we went next door and went on Double Loop. I waited one train for the front row. I had extremely low expectations for this ride, but ended up surprised. The first drop was entertaining and the first turn through the trees was also fun. Then came the double loop, the g forces were extremely powerful through both loops. They were both fun. The final hill gave some powerful ejector airtime and the helix was pretty fun. All in all it didn’t beat me up too bad and was a pretty intense ride. I liked it. I give it 7 out of 10.
Villain was still closed so we walked over to the other side of the park to get on Head Spin and Big Dipper.
We waited a train for the front seat on Head Spin. I don’t know if I’m just lucky or what, but this was my second Vekoma boomerang and so far I have really enjoyed both of them (the other being Sidewinder @ HP). It wasn’t rough at all and gave some nice forces, particularly going backwards. I give it 7 out of 10.
Big Dipper was closed, but now Villain was reopened. So we went back over there. The line was surprisingly long because they were only running one train. It took about 30 minutes to get on the front seat. I thought this was a pretty fun coaster, not too rough at all. The drops were pretty fun and there were a couple small pops of airtime. It wasn’t too rough at all, but it wasn’t very great as far as wood coasters go as it didn’t have great air or laterals or anything. I give it 8 out of 10.
After this I got a second ride on Dominator in the front seat, they were still running two trains and there was still no wait at all.
Since Raging Wolf Bobs was still closed, there was now only one coaster left to ride, Big Dipper. Thankfully it was now open and running one train, so I waited a couple trains for the front seat. I didn’t know what to expect from this ride because I never heard a lot of positive or negative reviews for it. Its definitely one of my favorite wood coasters now, though. The airtime is fantastic! I’ve never gotten such great floater air. Nearly every hill sent me flying out of my seat big time. I give it 9 out of 10.
After Big Dipper we had to get going so we could hit the road and get to Cedar Point and get on some of their coasters before it was too late.
All in all I thought Geauga Lake was a great park. Their coaster collection is very solid, the park is very clean, and the employees were all good. If you’re driving through I suggest stopping by if you’ve never been. I only spent a couple hours in the park and had a great time. I want to try and go back for a full day so I can get more rides on the coasters and check out their large collection of flat rides as well. Not to mention their water park which looks pretty impressive.
