KI, 6/15, AKA "Day of the Ciccadas!" My father and I decided to make a last minute trip to King's Island on Father's Day yesterday. I had heard that the park crowds were light on Father's Day. So we arrived at the park at 9:10AM. This is where the fun begins.
I think the Lord had sent a plague upon those of us who were skipping church, because the park and the surrounding grounds were completely INFESTED with Ciccadas. Apparently, down in the Ohio Valley region, this is their mating season (is it every 7 yrs?) While we were standing outside the gates waiting to be let in, the crowd was already being "attacked". By attacked, I mean, the ciccadas were landing and/or buzzing on/around everyone. The bugs themselves are harmless, but being as huge and ugly as they are, its hard to not get the creeps when they land on you. Kids and women, and, yes, even some grown men were caught running and screaming in terror from these things. I thought, "God hath sent a plague like unto the locusts" for me skipping church this morning. We spent the rest of the day, dodging them, esp on the coasters.
Anyways, all that aside, it really was a nice day to be at the park. My dad and I are members of ace and we had not been there since they moved the area where we usually met for the walkback. I went up to an older gentleman at the ON CALL window and asked if he knew where they meet for the walk back to the Beast. He said he thought it was at guest relations, which is where it used to be last year. He then later sought me out of the crowd waiting to get in at 9:30, walked over to me, and then informed me that they are now meeting over at the KI Theatre. I was very impressed that the took the time to find out for sure and then find me and tell me.
Here is a list of the stuff we rode:
Beast 2x (The first ride of the morning, in the front. When the track shook as we shuffled along to the lift hill, ciccadas were awakend from thier slumber and sent flying every where.)
The Crypt (WOW, this thing is way more intense than TR used to be.)
Backlot Stunt Coaster
Vortex
Firehawk (just me, dad doesn't care for this one.) The line was short but it still took upwards of 40 min to get on this thing.
Flight of Fear (CF breaks the heck out of this ride in the middle.)
We then split a LaRosa's pepperoni pizza at the Festhaus, watched the Country Music show inside, and then went to the Ice Skating show in the KI Theatre. I think this is what helped us from getting too hot and tired.
BTW, the ice skating show is mostly a remake of the old Snoopy on Ice show from the past two years that Cedar Point had. Several of the songs were the same and were in the same sequences. The only differences were a few different songs in the middle that dealt with racing instead of baseball/soccer, and instead of the peanuts characters they had Yogi and Scooby. I really think KI needs to bring back the Hanna Barbera characters to thier kid's section. But that's a topic for another thread.
After the ice show, we rode Son of Beast. (The sound of the ciccadas was deafening over here.)
Flight Deck (More ciccadas.........lot's more)
We took a ride on the Xtreme Skyflyer (For $5, we couldn't pass it up).
Invertigo
Adv. Express
Racer (smoothest woodie we were on all day, good airtime)
Zephyr
I took a ride on Shake, Rattle & Roll while dad took a cigar break.
We then went out to the car and downed a few 20 oz sodas from our cooler.
Then we went back inside and hit White Water Canyon and the Wild Thornberry's River Adv. We got good and wet, but not soaked. We skipped Congo Falls for that reason.
Scooby Doo and the Haunted Castle
Eiffel Tower (You can see the construction for the 2009 coaster really well here.)
If you want to take the time to look for them, there are several large footers over by the Crypt and surrounding area. KI has them semi covered up by large potted plants. It's pretty obvious that whatever they are building, it is going to go over the midway there.
We then rode Delerium. After that we decided to call it a day.
Aside from the ciccadas it was a pretty good day at King's Island.
