How anal is CP's rain policy exactly? (New question, respond before 1PM today!)

On Tuesday, there's a 35% chance of T-storms, and it's likely that a little bit of rain at night will occur. As of right now, it looks like it will probably be pretty cloudy. I have heard of some parks closing rides for rain even in rainless weather, basically for the "possibility" of rain. Does CP tend to do this? The last (first) time I was at CP was in 2004 - IE two or three years before the "let's piss off the guests" rain policy set in. On Wednesday, it seems that it will be dry, but still cloudy. Yet, it may be wise to determine the weather on Sunday.

Can anyone provide help with this?

From what I have heard, their policy seems to be pretty guest-friendly. Lightning's going to close a lot, but I have HEARD that they tend to be a bit generaous about not closing things.

Here's CP's weather policy...

Quote:
  • HIGH WINDS - These rides MAY close depending on wind speed and direction: Demon Drop, Gemini, Giant Wheel, Magnum XL-200, Mantis, maXair, Mean Streak, Millennium Force, Power Tower, Raptor, RipCord, Sky Ride, Skyhawk, Skyscraper, Snoopy Bounce, Space Spiral, Top Thrill Dragster and Zoom Flume.
  • ANY PRECIPITATION - These rides WILL CLOSE: 4 x 4's, Challenge Raceway, Demon Drop, Giant Wheel, Raptor, Top Thrill Dragster, Wildcat and Woodstock Express.
  • STEADY RAIN - All rides listed under ANY PRECIPITATION and the rides listed below will close: Calypso, Corkscrew, Disaster Transport, Gemini, Iron Dragon, Magnum XL-200, Mantis, Matterhorn, Maverick, Mean Streak, Millennium Force, Skyscraper and Snoopy Bounce.
  • HEAVY RAIN - All rides listed under ANY PRECIPITATION or STEADY RAIN and the rides listed below will close: Blue Streak, Junior Gemini, maXair, Mine Ride, Monster, Ocean Motion, Power Tower, Sky Ride, Skyhawk, Snake River Falls and Wicked Twister.
  • LIGHTNING and SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS
All rides will be closed during the severity of the storm and will start to reopen as soon as the storm or lightning passes.
Cedar Point has access to weather radar as well as any NWS alerts regarding the weather. Different rides may close for other reasons, even if the sign may say that it is closed due to weather conditions, such as mechanical or technical reasons. I've worked on Magnum when we had a steady drizzle to light rain in 2003. I've also ridden MIllennium Force in a steady rain, before they changed their policy on that ride (it's not a pleasant ride in the rain, trust me).

That high winds policy has definitely changed. Never were there so many rides under that listing.

Also, in my recent trip to KI, the entire park got shut down during a (very) light drizzle. But later that night, I witnessed Diamondback, Backlot Stunt Coaster, The Beast, Drop Zone, and Vortex operating in a torrential downpour, with thunderstorms in the area. Odd?

Does CP consider 19 mph gusts as high winds? (accuweather's predicted gust speeds)

Weather's looking a little iffy...

Not sure about Dragster or some of the rides, but I know on Magnum, they start getting concerned at 20mph and would start taking certain measures to keep it operating. They would start going by how long it took the trains to complete the circuit. If it got to be too much, they would shut the ride down.

I hope you're patient... I just about lost my mind two years when I went after the Magnum accident occurred. Any rain meant no operation unless they ran one train. So it would drizzle slightly, not nearly enough to justify closing a ride, the ride closes. They wait for the rain to stop. When it does they start testing. The run crap ton of cycles. It starts to rain again. Repeat. Finally they start running one train so its at least open, but the line is longer then hell...

Ugh, just an absolutely moronic plan. If its still anything like that then it sucks...

Eh, deal with it...they are looking out for your safety. So if being anal is on the menu, it is for your safety. They don't want to risk a lawsuit, which I don't blame.

If its real windy out, TTD will be closed along with the Space Spiral. The Sky Ride will close if the wind gets bad.

Ok, this isn't realy about their rain policy, but more of how the rides run: (Please respond before 1PM today, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have access to a computer at the hotel with free internet.)

How much would the temperature affect the rides over here? It's going to be in the low to mid sixties for the whole trip... it's a shame, because it is going to be in the seventies today (when I'm driving over.) I remember riding Galaxi at Sylvan Beach this year when it was only about 60 or so, and they started testing with only one car trains instead of two because it ran so much slower. And I remember that the turns took at least twice as long as normal. How much would it affect, oh say Maverick, etc. compared to a little SDC Galaxi?

Sounds like a time to bundle up....you might want to take a jacket with you in that kind of weather.

(I bet those bring back some memories)

Up north, many of us find the 60's to be decent weather most times.

Gloves? You don't wear gloves on a roller coaster.

I wish I had gloves on when I rode Kentucky Rumbler in December 2007. It was 15 degrees.

Tanks4me05, you shouldn't expect anything different from normal operations in 60 degrees. The rides won't roll back, and they won't be any slower than normal.

When I was at cedar point a couple weeks back we had two of the 4 days where it rained. They kept pretty much everything shut down besides magnum and power tower. On the second day we had rain a little drizzle crept in around 4 in the afternoon while we were in line for raptor and they shut it down. The majority of the two hours it was closed there wasn't even any rain and when I checked radar there were no storms near by just rain and light wind. When they finally opened it they ran one train on it for about 10 cycles. And I noticed each time they did open a ride after a little driZle they only ran on train on those. I noticed this on re first day because millenium and magnum only ran one train just about all day.

Oh I had to wear them alright: 50 degrees + steady rain + breezy = COLD! I was shivering intensely on Raging Bull with bare hands, but those gloves did work wonders and kept a bad situation from getting worse.
