| 8/29/09: TS Danny New England Washout- Funworld, Nashua, NH
Months ago I looked during the winter at MLB schedules. I learned an important lesson in the past that Red Sox tickets went on sale before the Philadelphia Phillies ones in February. Either in January or February with a sudden flash I remembered to check the Red Sox ticket schedule. My cousin, the Yankees fan that started going to school in Boston, checked for tickets and saw only standing room was available. We snagged those tickets for this past weekend, a Sunday game and our first time visit as general baseball fans that want to get important baseball stadiums around the nation. For months I planned on coming up Saturday and going to Maine first to get Funtown-Splashworld's Excalibur wooden coaster and the 3 other coasters in Maine. This week it turned out Tropical Storm Danny was coming up the coast. My excitement for getting Excalibur was beginning to be dashed when my mother told me midweek to watch for the storm. Looking at the weather later I began to see the gloomy forecast ahead. I even looked at hour by hour forecasts to try and find any hope of completing my visit. Saturday morning came along and indeed I was driving through nonstop rain through New England. I wrote down a list of all possible parks in the area, even west to Albany and the Great Escape. Even though I knew driving through the rain that the parks wouldn't open I still called the parks to confirm their closure. Six Flags New England - closed, Funtown Splashworld in Maine - closed. I had one glimmer of hope left: Funworld in Nashua, NH. It's an indoor play area-arcade with an indoor Orient Express. From the Book of James I decided I was going to follow some verses and take this indoor rollercoaster as a consolation prize. From the lemondrops of rain I made some lemonade for the day. Through pouring rain gushing out of gutters I walked into Funworld: what a blast from the past. I remember a place like this from first grade with a birthday party I went to. Tons of arcade games, a three story play area, lots of light fixtures and mirrors that reminded me of the 80's. I think in NH things like this could survive. In one corner of the FEC there was a double decker carousel. On the second story I found the Orient Express rollercoaster. Just like the former Tig'r coaster at Wild Adventures this coaster has a tilted hill coming off the lift going into the helix. I think being indoors protected this ride from the elements and becoming more rough. This ride was better than the other models like the WA one and the one I rode at Beech Bend park in KY. Around Nashua, NH I have family. (Explains why I play the Yankees vs. Red Sox field) They weren't home unfortunately. I already have Canobie but drove by it on my way down to my cousin's in Chelsea, MA by Boston. Sunday the weather was great. My cousin and I had fun at the Red Sox - Toronto Blue Jays game. I left at 6pm Boston and thought maybe I could slip in a hour visit at SFNE to make up for the weekend and get The Great Chase and check up on how Bizarro changed Superman Ride of Steel but that wasn't meant to be either. I stopped by my one uncle's house in Southern NY in time to watch the end of the Philadelphia Phillies- Atlanta game on ESPN Sunday Night. I vow I'll be back to get Funtown in Maine. I'll visit the family in New Hampshire. The weather was against me this time. I didn't cry about it though. I took the lemons and made some decent lemonade from it. I still got a credit: an indoor one. Better something than nothing.
