Disneyland celebrates another 50th anniversary

It’s been a year of golden milestones for Disneyland. The park’s 50th anniversary celebration took place in July, with another 50th anniversary coming next month. On Oct. 3 the park will commemorate the 50th year of the Mickey Place Club TV show.

The event, which takes place from 1-1:30 pm PDT that afternoon, will feature ten of the 39 original Mouseketeers handpicked by Walt Disney in 1955. The original show ran from 1955 to 1959 and was revived under different names in 1977 and the late 1980s.

La Ronde plans Halloween of fright and fun

A Halloween celebration that will scare some and delight others is in the works for La Ronde this year. The annual Halloween Fright Fest will run on certain days, Friday through Monday, from Oct. 1-23.

Among the more frighting attractions is Dr. Von Terror’s Clinic, a haunted hospital under the control of the sinister Dr. Von Terror. There is also a zombie-infested ski-hill called Zombie Zone and Vampire Promenade, where a vampire hunter seeks to disrupt a vampire prince’s coronation.

Six Flags Great Adventure to add El Toro; new themed areas

In 2006, thrill seekers at the World’s largest regional theme park will challenge El Toro, an enormous, new wooden roller coaster under construction at Six Flags Great Adventure.

The thrill ride, which incorporates the most daring features of the world’s best wooden roller coasters combined with the smooth speed of a steel coaster, will be the star of a vibrant, newly-themed area of the park, Plaza del Carnaval. Just around the corner, families with young children will explore exciting, pint-sized adventures in the all-new Bugs Bunny National Park kids’ area, featuring new rides and attractions designed just for them.

Six Flags New Orleans future unclear after Katrina

When Six Flags purchased the bankrupt Jazzland amusement park in 2002 and renamed it Six Flags New Orleans, it’s unlikely the company could have anticipated the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. The storm heavily damaged the park’s rides and left it under 12 feet of water. (more…)

Disney eyes South Korea for newest park

The Walt Disney Company has been in talks with the city government of Seoul, South Korea about building a theme park there in the future. Disney already operates Hong Kong Disneyland, two parks in Tokyo and will be opening a Disneyland theme park in Shanghai, China in 2012. (more…)

Tivoli Gardens attendance down

One year after Tivoli Gardens drew a record number of guests to its park, they announced a 200,000 drop in attendance for the 2005 season. Over Three million guests visited one of Europe’s most popular amusement parks this year.

One day after it’s final operating day of the season, Tivoli officials announced 3,160,000 guests visited the world’s largest free-admission park. Officials say the attendance dropped due to their concert hall being closed for renovations and the fact that a brand new coaster, Dæmonen, drew a lot of attention last season.

Western Playland moves from El Paso

Western Playland amusement park is moving across the border. After disputes with the City of Ascarte Park, the owner decided to relocate the park to Sunland Park, New Mexico. The park relocation should be finished in time for the 2006 operating season. (more…)

Cedar Point looking at lowering ticket prices

Two straight years of declining admissions at Cedar Point is forcing the park to consider guest-boosting programs. One of the most likely options is a reduction in ticket prices.

For the rest of the season, the park has enacted $10 tickets for seniors and children, and may make the changes permanent for next year. Analysts say that lower ticket prices would bring in enough people to offset the decreased revenue-per-person.

Eisner to step down from Disney this week

The New York Times is reporting that controversial Disney CEO Michael Eisner will step down at the end of this week. Robert Iger will assume the CEO position this coming Saturday.

Eisner will have no send-off party. He expected to step down as CEO at the expiration of his contract in September 2006. Eisner was critical in the success of the Walt Disney Company in the 80’s and 90’s, but has recently come under fire in the past few years.
