News: Pirates may replace Tom Sawyer at Disneyland

Tom Sawyer Island, a feature at Disneyland since 1956, could join the list of past attractions at the park. According to websites that report Disney news, the park is considering redoing the island in a pirate theme.

The website MiceAge.com reports that the Disney budget, seeking approval this fall, sets aside $28 million to replace the island’s wooded, backcountry theme with a more tropical, pirate-appropriate atmosphere that would include the conversion of Fort Wilderness into an interactive pirate museum.

A spokesman for Disney would not confirm or deny the report, saying, "We’ll let you know when we have some details-if at all". Reportedly the island’s conversion would be done over the winter, opening in time for the May premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, the third installment of the popular film series.
