SANDUSKY, OH – Maui Sands, which opened its door to Sandusky just last summer, has already shuttered operations. The water park has laid off 100 workers and filed for bankruptcy.
This was sudden news not anticipated by the workers.
Lexi Robinson, the spokesperson for Maui Sands, admits the timing is unfortunate.
"You really couldn’t have a full meeting with everyone, it had to be kind of, we had to plan it out so we told the employees, we did tell them personally, and we do have staff here calling them," Robinson said.
Unfinished construction, the current economy and competition with established competitors added to the failure of Maui Sands.
The company plans to reopen in the future after construction is complete with additional attractions. Employees who were laid-off will recieve "special consideration" for jobs when the park reopens.
