News: Geauga Lake Carousel to be refurbished and moved

Posted Friday, December 19th, 2008 at 11:11 pm by Leo C

Cedar Fair announced the carousel of the historic former Geauga Lake amusement park will be refurbished. The refurbishment will get underway early in 2009. The ride will then be moved to another Cedar Fair park.

The Sandusky-based Cedar Fair already knows where the hand-carved, 1926 vintage Marcus Illions carousel is going but declined to comment where at this time.

The carousel was originally built for the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition in 1926. It appeared briefly in Birmingham, Alabama before being placed in storage. Geauga Lake purchased the ride in 1937. Illions himself restored the ride before it went into operation at the park. Geauga Lake closed in September 2007, and most of the rides were auctioned in June while others were moved to other parks.

The carousel and the park’s historic Big Dipper roller coaster remain on the Geauga Lake grounds. The Big Dipper was sold at the June auction to an unnamed buyer. Apex Western Machinery Company, of Akron, made the $5,000 bid for the so called unnamed buyer.

The Intamin Skyscraper ride also remains on-site at the park. It however was sold for scrap at the June auction.
