In December 2008 Morey’s Piers in Wildwood, NJ announced that the Golden Nugget mine ride attraction on Hunt’s Pier would be removed in 2009.
On January 31, 2009 there will be a public farewell ceremony held for the classic ride that has stood dormant on the former Hunt’s Pier. For years the Morey family has wrestled with the realms of nostaglia and innovation. The company sought various solutions from refurbishing the ride to even moving the attraction to one of the other nearby operating amusement piers of the Morey’s Complex.
In the end, the company determined the task would prove too much to bring Golden Nugget up to meet today’s strict codes and safety standards that the State of New Jersey and the industry has.
On December 19th Morey’s announced that an undisclosed buyer came forward and will remove the train and tracks for a possible future reuse. The buyer asked not to be identified at this time.
The Golden Nugget opened on Hunt’s Pier in July 1960. The attraction was three stories high. On the top floor riders were given the impression that they were traveling through the desert. The ride was engineered by John Allen and constructed by Philadelphia Toboggan Company.
