After operating under chapter 11 bankruptcy for the 2009 season, the 2010 season is very much in doubt for the Maggie Valley, NC park.
BB&T, the largest creditor of the park, is calling for the park to be liquidated to pay the $6 million debt.
Further complicating matters is a landslide on February 5th that originated on park land. A retaining wall system built by the park contributed to the slide, according to a state geologist. Three homes were damaged in the slide, and access to 37 others is still cut off.
During the 2009 season, employees had their payday delayed on occasion from Friday to Monday, allowing weekend ticket sales to help them make payroll. At the end of the season, some employees went unpaid for the final two weeks of the season.
The park has made no official announcement on plans for 2010 as of yet.
Well that sucks. It's such a cute little park, and they went through all the troubles of Cliffhanger and now maybe for nothing.
Yeah- I really enjoyed it when we went. It was in that last two weeks, too- some of those people who were so hospitable were doing it knowing that they might not get paid.
Wow, I was quite lucky to get a first time visit to the park when it was recently revived. It was before Cliffhanger's return but I was still lucky. It has a nice atmosphere and one of the best freefall rides I've ever been on. The scenery helped to magnify the effects of riding the gunslinger swings and the freefall tower. It was worth the visit for me.
Leo- I was lucky enough to be there when Cliffhanger was open, and got several rides on it. I just feel a loittle bad that some of the employees I encountered didn't get paid for the hospitality they extended.
Wes is the other lucky one to have Cliffhanger as well.
