News: Possible Astrodome Space Theme Park

By Kyle L

Jan. 26th, 2004 -- The Astrodome, located in Houston, Texas, is home to the NBA's Rockets, special events, and possibly an amusement park.

The Astrodome is a huge complex designed for a large audience and a variety of events. Unfortunately, the low attendance has been affecting the Astrodome, and owners claim that bookings and income have been low.  In addition, Super Bowl XXXVIII will be held at the stadium next door, while the Astrodome collects dust.

The Astrodome costs taxpayers of Houston $1 million annually, so the owners decided something must be done to occupy it to earn money.

One of the ideas that struck them was the idea of creating a space themed amusement park, as the Astrodome is enclosed and could add to the entire space theme. Since most amusement parks around the area are all standard, hot, and dry during the summer, the Astrodome would provide shade, air conditioning and some unique rides.

The new park would cost around $300 million, and would open in 2007. Even though it would be a huge project, it would generate some income.  Since the Astrodome has nothing better to occupy it with, the owners are considering this plan.
