News: Giant Dipper given landmark status

By Aaron

Aug. 31st, 2005 -- The California State Historic Preservation Commission declared the Giant Dipper at San Diego's Belmont Park a state historical landmark this month. The roller coaster, which is already considered both a city and a national landmark, is now one of two surviving landmark wooden coasters in the state.

The Giant Dipper was constructed in 1925 and was designed by Fredrick Church. It closed in 1976, but was reconstructed starting in 1983. The project cost $1.2 million and was reopened in 1990.
