News: Hong Kong Disneyland faces unfavorable first few months

By Chris L

Nov. 10th, 2005 -- Since its unveiling this fall, Hong Kong Disneyland has faced numerous unfavorable situations. The park has enraged local pop stars, antagonized labor leaders, delt with a resolved situation involving an attempted employee suicide on premesis, among others.

The impact of these headlining events were solidified when 500 Hong Kong consumers were surveyed and Asian trade magazine Media found that 24% had a negative view of Hong Kong Disneyland vs. 42% with a positive view.

The entertainment giant says that some troubles they've encountered were inevitable in a project as large as the $1.8 billion theme park and that, overall, things have gone well since the park opened on September 12. "For a project of this scale, things happen," remarked Hong Kong Disneyland spokeswoman Irene Chan. "Compared to other openings, this was very smooth."

This is not the first time Disney has had an initial bumpy ride with the opening of a new theme park. The Disneyland Resort Paris faced similar situations when it first opened as Euro Disney.
