News: No Segways at Disney

By Jill Anne

Feb. 8th, 2004 -- Disabled patrons of Walt Disney World Resorts have recently become angered at not being allowed to use Segway personal transporters within the resorts. This is actually a Disney policy across all the parks because Segways have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as medical devices.

Many disabled visitors are just plain sick of sitting, or so says Doug Exum, a 42-year-old programmer who rented an electric scooter to get around the park the last time he visited. He wants to bring his Segway next time. Like many other disabled visitors to Disney parks, he feels that sitting makes him seem even more handicapped than he already is when he knows he can use the Segway just as (if not more) efficiently to get around.
