News: Flight of Fear flies the coop at PKD

By Jerry Huster

Apr. 1st, 2006 -- Unfortunately not an April Fool's joke and to the dismay of coaster afficianados, Paramount's Kings Dominion has quietly extinguished the "Flight of Fear" (formerly "The Outer Limits Flight of Fear") rollercoaster for the 2006 season...just shy of its tenth season in operation.

Guests visiting the park for PKD's opening weekend, hoping to ride the linear-induction launch coaster, were greeted with a large black fence closing off the themed area that welcomed riders with a faux military-base motif.

There was no official mention of the closure previous to the park's opening this weekend. According to a staffer stationed at the park's "Anaconda" rollercoaster, workers were informed of the closure just a few weekends ago and were told that it "might be moved to another park." "We really couldn't believe it."

The "Flight of Fear" ride, building, and themed area sit intact but "will not be operating for the 2006 season", according to PKD's Guest Relations office. The anonomous worker at the "Anaconda" stated the general believe if enough guests complain, the park will have no choice but to reopen it.

The "Flight of Fear" has been removed from park maps and the park website and leaves the park with 10 rollercoaster-type rides...which would have been 11 with this season's addition of "The Italian Job Turbo Coaster" opening later this spring.

An identical ride at Paramount's Kings Island is scheduled to open with the park on April 14th.
