News: Astroland sold to developers

By Aaron

Nov. 28th, 2006 -- Coney Island's 3.1-acre Astroland amusement park has been sold by the Albert family to a developer, who intends to redevelop the site into a year-round resort. Coaster enthusiasts can rest assured though, as the famous Cyclone roller coaster will remain open under the Albert's ownership.

At the end of the 2007 season, Astroland will close and will be redeveloped at a cost of $1.5 billion. The plan for the new resort includes a hotel and the addition of a new roller coaster.

The Alberts will continue to own some of Astroland's rides. They eventually hope to move the rides to another site and add new attractions.
