News: New Waterpark for Kansas City

By Kyle L

Mar. 17th, 2004 -- The Kansas City commission has approved construction rights and funding for a new waterpark. The comission agreed to contribute 2 million dollars to the 8.25 million dollar project. The park is expected to open by summer of 2005.

The new waterpark includes lots of typical attractions found at other waterparks around the country. The park includes: A lazy river, gentle slides, childrens play area, and a few high speed thrill slides. The new waterpark would be along the Tiffany Springs Road and North Congress Avenue in Kansas City.

“This is a tremendous project, and it's great that Kansas City is building it in the Northland,” said Brian Nowotny, the county's parks and recreation director. “There has long been a need for something like this.”

The 2 million dollars funded for the new park is coming from sales taxes raised by the local branch. The comission has approximatley 1.7 million dollars currently, and hope to raise 2 million by the end of the month.

The comission supports the idea of the park. Brian Nowonty claims: “The city is behind this project,” he said. “They looked at systemwide needs, and saw there was a lot of area and a lot of population in Platte County, and that another facility like this did not exist in the Northland.”

Construction is set to begin this June, and the group has a set open date on Memorial Day of 2005. The commission and park builders have positive views about the overall project.
