News: Coney Island's Astroland closing for good

By Chip

Sep. 9th, 2008 -- Astroland at Coney Island is closing for good, the park's owner announced.

The park's lease expires Jan. 31, and though previous negotiations worked out, park owner Carol Albert said the property owner won't meet with her to discuss the lease. Thor Equities, the property owner, desputes Albert's story.

Albert said that on Sunday at 9 p.m., rides, midway lights and games will be shut down for good. Many rides are listed for sale at www.rides4u.com.

The Cyclone roller coaster and Wonder Wheel are city landmarks and would still operate next year.
