News: Coaster disaster averted by electric eye

By Aaron

Aug. 3rd, 2004 -- A ride on Geagua Lake's Double Loop roller coaster could have ended in disaster if an electronic eye hadn't noticed a problem.

The coaster's safety bars are locked when the ride operators step on a pedal. However, the coaster's ride operators failed to lock the safety bars on the front car of a train where two people were sitting. Before the train could make it up the lift hill, an electric eye noted the problem and stopped the coaster.

Geauga Lake has terminated the employment of the three ride operators, citing safety violations.
