News: Alton Towers fined 5,000 pounds

By Aaron

Nov. 1st, 2004 -- Alton Towers has been involved in a legal battle for several months with a couple living near the park's entrance, who claim that noise from the amusement park has upset their lifestyle. Today the legal fight took another turn when a judge ordered the park to pay 5,000 pounds, or $9,170.

Judge Timothy Gascoigne initially ruled that the park had violated noise nuisance laws back in August, due to several factors, including screams from riders, fireworks, and corporate functions. The 5,000-pound fine is the maximum permitted by law.

As a sign of just how determined the couple is, the Tussauds Group, which operates Alton Towers, estimated that the couple has spent 250,000 pounds ($458,525) in their efforts against the park. Alton Towers, which recently closed for the winter, said it would appeal the ruling.
