ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 2004--Jack and Peter Herschend, co-owners and co-founders of Herschend Family Entertainment and Silver Dollar City, were inducted into the Hall of Fame of the amusement industry's largest organization worldwide, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA). The award was presented Wednesday, November 17 at the IAAPA annual convention in Orlando, Fla.
The Herschends were cited for their experience, their strong commitment to family values, sound business development, originality and strategic vision. Their role of leadership in the theme park industry began with the Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, Missouri, and has expanded to 19 family-oriented attractions in nine states, spanning more than 50 years. "These legends and living legends are recognized not only for their contributions to the industry but also to causes and efforts that help humankind," said Joe Meck, member of the board of directors for IAAPA. In addition to their work in the industry, the Herschends were recognized for a myriad of community contributions, including Peter's efforts as the nation's top individual fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis through the MS 150, having raised almost $1 million in just over 10 years; and Jack's contributions to many youth programs and his Gift of Green program, which has gifted nearly 200,000 trees to individuals and businesses. The IAAPA Hall of Fame celebrates outstanding achievement and contributions to the growth and development of the amusement park and attractions industry, an industry that depends on the imaginations, talents and visions of its dream builders, according to IAAPA officials. Industry pioneers who have been honored include Walt Disney, Ferris wheel creator George Ferris and Knott's Berry Farm founder Walter Knott. The IAAPA convention draws over 40,000 attendees from nearly 100 countries. "Folks who accept awards always thank so many people," said Jack Herschend. "In our case, it's really true -- it's the individuals of HFE who really are responsible for this award." The Herschend brothers' leadership and commitment to excellence led to previous international recognition including the prestigious Applause Award for 1999/2000 and the 2001 THEA Award for themed entertainment. The brothers' achievements and guidance have also helped to bring their hometown and state of Branson, Missouri, to national recognition as a tourism destination. "This is an honor for our families and an honor earned and owned by every man and woman who has ever worked for any of our properties. That means nearly 100,000 people over the past half-century," said Peter Herschend. For additional information on Herschend Family Entertainment properties and operations, contact 417-338-8207.
