Finance: Sandusky May Rescind Parking Tax

Jan. 14th, 2004 -- Sandusky's City Commission has asked its lawyers to draft an ordinance rescinding the parking tax imposed last year, which Cedar Point has been lobbying against. Janice Witherow, a Cedar Point spokesperson, said that legal action has been planned if the city does not abolish the tax. Cedar Point's lawyers feel that the tax is aimed soley at the amusement park in hopes of getting money from tourist parking.

If the motion to repeal the tax receives approval of four of the seven Sandusky commissioners, it will need a second reading before it is finally passed. If more commissioners approve it at the first time, the repeal will take effect on an emergency basis.

Last year Cedar Point paid $372,000 under protest because of the tax. The tax is also paid by a church. The park paid nearly $7 million in other taxes last year.

It is unclear whether rescinding the tax will pass down savings to park visitors.
