Revenge of the Mummy, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal Studios Florida
Oct 29 2003
SPOILER WARNING: The following description reveals some key story elements and ride expriences from the upcoming Revenge of the Mummy dark ride/coaster hybrid attraction. Don't continue reading if you'd rather be kept in the dark. However, the Universal folks are keeping some details, which they promise will be mind-boggling, shrouded in secrecy. So even if you read on, you won't know everything.
Note: The Hollywood and Florida versions of the attraction, while essentially similar, will have subtle differences. The following description, gleaned from a tour of the attraction under construction and an interview with Jennifer Sauer, Revenge of the Mummy's creative director, refers to the Universal Orlando ride.
The journey begins as riders enter the Museum of Antiquities. It's not really a museum, but the hot set of the next "Mummy" movie sequel. (It's not REALLY a movie set, that's part of the attraction's storyline. But, play along with me, OK?) When you see the cameras, movie lights, storyboards, and costume cribs, you realize you've walked onto the film set's backstage area.
While in the queue, video monitors show a "mockumentary" (a la "Spinal Tap" and "A Mighty Wind") about the making of the latest "Mummy" flick. It seems weird stuff has been happening on the set. Some of the film's stars believe the place is cursed, while others say there's no such thing as curses. (Oh oh. Theme park calamity foreshadowing.) The video introduces Reggie, a low-level, but highly enthusiastic member of the movie's crew. He may have something to do with the ensuing calamity. Cue the suspenseful music.
The core of the queue winds around a burial chamber and an archaeological dig. In the center is an enormous Egyptian statue that sits above a freshly unearthed keystone. Scaffolding is set up around the statue. While there's ample evidence of the tomb raiders' work, they seem to have vanished. The plot thickens.
The story appears a bit muddled here. While we guests are eavesdropping onto the Mummy movie set, apparently actual archaeologists have actually dug up ancient artifacts. So...is the film being shot on location? But, aren't we supposed to be on a studio lot winding through an indoor soundstage made to look like a museum? Maybe I'm thinking this through way too much.

A rendering of the Revenge of the Mummy ride experience.
The queue leads guests up to the second level where they board the ride. The load station looks like a temple. Work lights powered by a portable generator light the area. Ride operators dressed like ancient Egyptians escort guests onto the ride. The vehicles, which look like industrial carts, are used by the archaeologists to transport supplies and relics in and out of the dig.
We're going into the catacombs of the Mummy.
In the first scene, riders hear whispers, see flickering lanterns, and pass a train of cars filled with mummified folks wearing Islands of Adventure shirts and sporting fanny packs. It's the load of passengers that preceded us. Things are not looking good.
A voice from around the corner beckons. One of the mummies is still alive. It's Reggie who warns us that the curse is very real and that we need to get out. When the train moves forward, he tells us to look for the symbol of the magi, which is the only thing that will save us. The Mummy himself materializes and sucks the life out of Reggie. He turns to the riders and says, "With your souls, I will rule for all eternity." The train hightails it out of there and into the next chamber.
Behind an altar, the Mummy busts through a wall and appears as a large sand face. He makes an offer: "Join me and savor the riches of a thousand dynasties." Miraculously, a treasure trove of gold and jewels appears on either side of the train. "Or refuse and suffer a more bitter treasure," the Mummy continues. The room darkens, animated warrior mummies pop out of troughs on either side of the train. One of the animatronic warriors leaps onto the vehicles. Braziers on the altar burst into 10-foot flames, while a 20-foot flame shoots out towards the train, engulfs the ceiling, and turns the room into an inferno. The vehicles move toward a huge stone door that's descending and threatens to crush the passengers. Just as they face certain doom, the train makes a little coaster-like dip.
Having survived that insanity, the train scoots around the corner and into a dead-end room. With no way out, the vehicles proceed backwards, reverse direction, and tear through the mouth of the Mummy for a 1.5-G, Hulk-style launch uphill and into the coaster part of the attraction.
Details get sketchier here. The coaster ride includes some 0-G weightlessness all the way up to positive 3.5-Gs moments. There are no inversions, but there are some highly banked 80-degree turns. There is a blood-curdling 50-degree drop that, because it is in complete darkness, feels like an eternity. Ghosts, which I believe are projected onto fog, pursue the passengers throughout the coaster ride. The finale is one of the elements Universal is keeping under wraps.
I think it's cool how they are now mixing roller coaster and dark rides into one. Sounds like the theming is going to be killer, too.
Yah, just like Rhino Rally minus the dangerous live animals and dumb ass operators flipping your vehicle over.....

When I first heard about this project, I wasn't expecting it to be enough to draw me back to Universal on my next trip in May, but the way this thing is turning out, I don't think I could avoid it. It sounds very cool.
Anyone have any idea on the cost?

What to say? I have always been slightly unimpressed by Universal. Their movies all have the same, poor quality feel, always watered down. Their theme parks always have the same watered down feel too. Everyone said (and says) IOA is the greatest place, Spider man is the best, etc.. But upon my visit, it had no atmosphere and poor themeing. There was little to no originality either. The only thing that was original was Spiderman which was, among other things, poorly executed. All this leads me to their newest ride which they are over hyping to gain lots of attention. Universal has never done anything that stands out, and despite all the descriptions, I think they are written in a way to make you think this will be the greatest ride ever created. Universal is like a fourth or fifth rate Disney. They copy them in almost every conceivable manor, design nothing of quality or originality, and proceed to insult disney as their markiting ploy. To me, this ride sounds like their attempt at an Indiana Jones type ride, but they didn't have the imagination to created what Disney has. Until I ride the ride myself (if I ever have extra money to waste at Universal), I will not expect anything great or spectacular to come of this ride, or any ride that Universal ever creates.

Universal isn't over hyping the ride, us, as enthusiasts, are over hyping the ride. Universal has barely said/done anything about it, and the only information we're getting is from that interview, and spys/leaks.
As for your trrible time at IOA, yes, that park is very small, and it's easy to get bored, but when you say spiderman was "poorly executed", what other ways could they have done that ride? It's a prototype attraction, and was most likely made in the best way it could've been done.
EDIT: And I can no longer seem to find the thread on IOA Central where you could download the sounds, someone care to point me in the right direction? Or was that thread deleted?
wow this looks amazing. one thing...is the rollercoaster part going to be all backwards? if it is, i think thats a mistake. a lot of the ride sounds visual and if your going backwards, it will take away from it.

It was poorly exicuted. The plot is very weak, the que line is horribly done, bland and boring. The actual ride vehicles do not allow for a smooth ride at all, and could use much more padding. The 3D could probably have been done better to make it more realistic. The ride is overhyped by too many people, and too many people tell me that Disney needs to match this. They matched it long ago when Indiana Jones first opened up.
And congradulations on that feat SFGadvKing.

I am because most of their rides, and all of their themeparks are of unsurpassed quality. Spiderman was worse than Dinosaur! and that says a lot.

The coaster part is not backwards. From what I've read, I'm pretty sure the backwards part isn't a big part of the ride. I could be wrong though.

^ Oh. I kinda thought that meant it goes backwards and then "reverse direction" meant the trains turn back around. Who knows, I'll be finding out in April. :)
