Knoebels Flying Turns

There was probably a lot more to it that just "common sense."

For one, they may have been the only company willing to build a wooden coaster that big and with a loop.
Second, if they weren't the only one willing, then they were probably the company that offered the best price.

And back to it we should go. They've come so far and we hope there's just one detail that pops us that allows them to properly develop a train for it and have it finally open.

Havn't really heard anything. but the park is busy at the moment reconstructing Black Diamond.

When i was there last weekend it looked more or less finished. They even had the queue area built. However it looks like they are still working on perfecting the cars so who knows how long that will take. My guess would be it will open next season.

Wow. How dare anybody try to make a new Flying Turns. To me this is total Blasphemy. There was only one true Flying Turns and that was at Euclid Beach Park. But then again, back then, way back then, there were no height restrictions, just a small chain across your lap, and you're only real safety was the adult who was with you or hanging on for your life!

Sorry, I haven't kept much up with new rides, coasters etc. Enjoying too much time on the golf course. But I just have to say, once you rode the Flying Turns at Euclid Beach, nothing will compare, ever! Heck, one time after the park closed and the workers walk the ride, they even found a set of dentures...talk about a hell of fun/rough ride! LOL!!

But this coming from an old lady who now would rather be on the golf course or at a casino. Talk to you all again in a year or so.

I hope they open this next season. I hope Black Diamond is not too much smoke over this project. We're anxious to see it in action and we're tired of the wait.

Another season coming up. I just picked up the ACE Newsletters the old ACE-r I know gives me. He loves the idea of this concept coming back and we're still waiting for it. I could imagine the wood has lost its new look. It's probably a little faded. I'm thinking about that train. Are the diameters of the wheels a issue in all this in dealing with the sloped wood? Would love to see new trains move on this thing.

The issue isn't really just with trains I don't think; with each new train design alterations need to be made with the track and other ride aspects for it all to work. Hopefully at some point this thing will open up, I have to say its impressive that the park has this much patience...

The park gave us this POV this weekend on facebook to show us some progress. I guess the building before the third and final lift back into the station is the transfer track shed. I would want to have to add three credits at Knoebels not two: Flying Turns, Kosmo's Kurves, and Black Diamond.

The ride looks like it goes faster than I was expecting (though it might just be the angle of the camera). Too bad they said it probably wont open this season

it looks like it gets pretty wicked in the second section.

Yeah it definitely looks like it could get out of control with riders on board.

The second half of the ride looks sweet, WAY more intense than I was anticipating.

I think the fact the camera is as low as can be between the wheels adds to the intensity in the POV. It's still going to be intense if you move the camera up. I recall riding Alpine Bobs at The Great Escape Thunderhawk said he was not looking forward to the track funnels right before the Mid course brakes sections.

This simply looks awesome. Knoebels can take as much time as they want on it since I know they're looking to make it a near-perfect experience. Once it opens, I will be making that ~3 hour trip out!

That's impressive. Whoa. I'm so excited to visit Knobels to ride this. This will be one sweet new/old nostalgic thrilling gem when it opens.

Does the apocalypse seem more certain to happen in 2012 than to finally get a grand opening of the Flying Turns?

I think so. I have written this coaster off a long time ago. Groundbreaking for this coaster started in January 2006. Let's put that in perspective. Back then the following coasters did not exist:

El Toro
Patriot
Intimidator
Intimidator 305
Diamondback
Maverick
Griffon
Fahrenheit
Tatsu
Prowler
Mystery Mine

Just to name a few. It is time to cut losses and move on.

I haven't been to Knoebels in about 2 years but I know that wood doesn't have a new look to it anymore.

Yeah, that is what I figured too. I'm sure by now that most of that wood needs to be replaced. Last time I was there was around 2005 because I know the coaster did not exist at all while I was there.

I believe I was only there when there was definitely something on the spot: I rode the Whirlwind Vekoma corkscrew coaster and then came to see this huge wooden Disaster Transport wooden bobsled thing there.

I think they'll get it open this year. They released a POV video a couple of months back, and I just don't see Knoebels doing that if they weren't fairly certain they would be able to get it open.

At any rate it hasn't been SBNO as long as Orphan Rocker.

A small park like this can afford the super low capacity if that what it takes to get a train that can be safe, reliable, approved by inspection to get rolling.

Now that I think about it, it would be pretty awesome this year to pick up two new credits on my annual visit to Knoebels. If the other three bobsled coasters I've ridden are any indication, this will have a fairly substantial line due to low capacity and slow loading.
