6/27/2003 June 26th, 2003 -- The Suburban Chicago News has posted an interesting article dealing with the original political issues surrounding the building of the now Six Flags Great America. The article may be read here. Click Read More to hear my thoughts on some of the issues.
Please note the following is the opinion of Kyle Rehm --
As posted in the article, many people did oppose the annexation of the land, however the measure did pass. Today every time Six Flags Great America proposes a new coaster over 125 feet in height it must be approved by the City of Gurnee Planning Commission, and even though the park has become a vital part of the economy to the city, people still try to oppose any new rides. Many complain that they don't wish to hear the screams of people or the noise of the rides themselves. Now, before someone posts this yes some of the people living next to the park were there before it was built, however a majority of them moved in after the park was built. I feel that these people have no right to complain and in fact are hurting the one thing that made Gurnee the destination that it is today. As the article stated if it wasn't for Great America, Gurnee most likely would not have attractions such as Gurnee Mills. My statement to anyone who complains living next to the park is this; What did you expect when you moved in next to the park? Anyone who is against any reasonable expansion of Six Flags Great America is against the improvement of the city of Gurnee.
Sorry if this seems a bit off topic to anyone, I just had to vent this for some reason; Feel free to post any comments if you agree or disagree with me; and remember this is just my opinion.
