30 Years Of Orlando Magic
10/3/2001

LAKE BUENA VISTA, FL (PRNewswire) - Walt Disney World Resort turned 30 Monday -- and launched its 100 Years of Magic celebration -- in ceremonies marked by song, bursts of confetti, a train full of colorful Disney characters and an old-fashioned railroad station done up in decorations of red, white and blue.

"Since our opening 30 years ago today," said Walt Disney World President Al Weiss in front of the Magic Kingdom, "one theme park has grown to four. Two hotels have become 18. We've added three water parks, a sports complex, an entertainment district."

"Some things, however, have never changed. Walt Disney's vision for his theme parks, for instance, guides us still today."

"During 100 Years of Magic we will celebrate not only Walt but all things Disney."

Monday's park guests were treated to performances by a Disney brass band and a barbershop quartet, appearances by everyone from Mickey Mouse to Tigger, the unveiling of a 100 Years of Magic ten-foot topiary and the singing of classic Disney songs.

Under blue skies, the celebration was joined by 50 Disney characters who stepped off the Walt Disney World Railroad to the applause of guests, including 30-year cast members who were special invitees.

On now until Dec. 31, 2002, Disney's 100 Years of Magic celebration honors the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walt Disney (Dec. 5, 1901). In tribute to Walt's legacy of innovation, imagination and family entertainment, Disney World is unwrapping exciting new parades in all four parks, a 122-foot-tall Sorcerer's Hat icon anchoring Disney-MGM Studios and "Walt Disney: One Man's Dream," a walk-through attraction showcasing memorabilia from the Disney archives -- many items never before seen in public.

All told, the new entertainment spectacles involve more than 400 performers, the largest entertainment rollout in the 30-year history of Walt Disney World Resort.

Weiss called 100 Years of Magic "our greatest celebration yet ... celebrating Walt Disney and all the ideas and plans that his imagination continues to inspire."
