News: Plane Crashes on Coney Island Beach

Posted at 9:24 AM EDT (1324 GMT)

May. 22nd, 2005 -- Saturday afternoon a small Cessna 172S was circling over Coney Island on a sightseeing tour when the engine stalled. Shortly thereafter the plane went into a tailspin and crashed onto Coney Island's fabled beach killing all four people aboard.

No one and nothing on the ground was harmed. According to eyewitnesses, the pilot tried desperately to regain control of plane but failed. A registered nurse eating inside Nathan's Famous hot dog restaurant rushed to the scene of the crash but found the pilot already dead and a female passenger barely alive. She passed away minutes later.

The crash occurred within site of the Wonder Wheel on the beach near KeySpan Park, a minor league baseball stadium. The cause of the crash is currently unknown but is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.

I just love the way you put it. "Killing all four passengers but not harming the stunned witnesses or The Cyclone."

Make sure you let everybody know that a coaster survived, even though four human lives were lost.

I'm sorry, it just hit me wrong that you had to say Cyclone survived!! It's like saying, four people died, but that coaster is ok! So everything is good!

The way you state that just sounds very uncaring!!

For goodness sake, have you ever noticed that it's not news unless it mentions the stupid coaster? Aside from that, if you don't mention the coaster a few people would leave notes asking if it harmed any of the rides.

Trainguy, on the home page, it says, "but not harming the stunned witnesses or The Cylcone". It's says that right after saying all four in the plane were killed. The only reference point they needed to say was Coney Island. The news article did not talk about the coaster being ok, it was the member of TN who made sure to say that. That's what I think is wrong!!! It's like saying four people died, but you coaster people, the coaster is just fine.

I probably sound like an idiot to most of you, but, to say four people died, but a coaster is just fine, is just wrong!! It makes it sound like the members of this site care more about the coaster surviving than the humans.

I did not say that (whatever is posted is what ClicheCoaster wrote)... I simply posted the story.

I fixed the lede so it doesn't specifically mention the Cyclone.

I think it should mention The Cyclone. Last I checked this was a ROLLER COASTER and AMUSEMENT PARK web site! This is laughable. (The corectness, not the accident.) Ease up folks!

This is one of those damn news stories that can't be discussed on the forums, because it's on the home page. That would be a good subject.

{ points to what 5150 is saying } See? That's why I mentioned the stupid coaster in the lede.
I found the story posted to RRC and thought the location was interesting, but we have any number of members here who think that it has to be about coasters and parks. If it crashed directly in Astroland, of course, that would make it admittable, but it being on the beach made it questionable. And yes, there are people around who would say that if nothing on the ground was harmed it shouldn't be mentioned here.
I, on the other hand, felt that it was worth mentioning as there are popular sight seeing flights all around that area both so that you can see New York from a different angle, but also so that you can see Coney Island from a different angle: one more similar to the old Parachute jump without the added excitement of riding the Wonder Wheel which is pretty distracting (if you don't know what I mean I suggest you go and ride the ride now).
If a four year old plane that was doing one of these tours failed, that means that anybody that might be visiting the island any time soon should know, for one, so that they can better decide whether they want to jump aboard and do it themselves. Four years old is not old for a plane, in fact, it's practically brand new. It could have either crashed because of a fluke, but it's more likely that it was a maintenence issue or pilot error on correcting the stall. Planes that are 20 and 30 years old in good condition don't generally crash and kill four people even if they stall since small planes can be glided to the ground.

Thanks for deleting the part about the cyclone Steven, it just makes me look like a liar and a complete idiot!! But, that's what most of you think I am anyway.

Fine.

Leeloo. Why? Why? Why? Steven said "I fixed the lede so it doesn't specifically mention the Cyclone." He didn't delete it so it could make you look like a liar. Geez. You are hard headed.

I've seriously had it with your complaining, and it's clear you don't even read the entire thread on this page before coming to a conclusion. No, I did not remove it to make you look stupid. I removed it because you actually had a point. Now, you're making me look like an idiot because I listened to you and exercised my right as editor-in-chief and fixed the line (and said that I did what I did). I don't understand you at all, Leeloo.

Also, 5150, This is not just a roller coaster and amusement park site. We focus on amusement parks, but we are also about all rides.

I was down on Long Island over the weekend. I was going to go to Coney after I went to rye Playland.. But didnt go.. Then I saw all over TV that a plane "fell out of the sky" onto the beach.. They had some videos that show the crash being like right next to the park.

I am going to kick myself for even devoting these seconds to defend myself BUT I mentioned AMUSEMENT PARKS, which if you haven't been lately, have RIDES in them. I thought it was a given that they were included. I SPECIFICALLY mentioned coasters because:

1: that's why most, not all, of us are here. (CHECK FORUM SUBJECTS)

2: history serves that this site came to be because of Coker's mostly roller coaster site.

Should I mention all rides specifically? Whips, darkrides, tumblebugs, inverters, scramblers...

When I read the article, the first thing that came to mind was, "Did the Cyclone get hit?". Simply because I was on a roller coaster, amusement park, and RIDES site. I was interested in knowing.

How shallow are people here? Plane crash at/near a park, and the first thing you think about is the coaster instead of the human occupants.

Yes, this is a site that has news dealing with coasters and amusement parks and what not, but you can't be serious when you value a coaster over human lives.
