News: Kingda Ka Downtime

Posted at 11:51 AM EDT (1551 GMT)

Jun. 10th, 2005 -- In the Loop, Weekend Review just received this statement from the desk of Kristin Siebeneicher, Public Relations Director at Six Flags Great Adventure:

During routine testing of the Kingda Ka roller coaster June 8, the ride
experienced a malfunction and is temporarily out of service. As this
was a test run of the coaster, no one was on the ride. We apologize for
the inconvenience and are working diligently to have the ride operating
as soon as possible. We thank our valued guests for their patience and
understanding.

We will be talking about this on next weeks In the Loop (uploaded Saturday, June 11th).

Why don't they say how it malfunctioned?

^because it's bad publicity. I have the story though from screamscape.

"Screamscape has been sent a confirmed report that Kingda Ka suffered what appeared to be a serious malfunction Wednesday afternoon. As you can read in the report filed by About.com Theme Parks the ride was down all morning due to reported problems with the transfer track and while testing in the afternoon an empty train launched down the track with a loud racket and appears to be shooting out shards of metal from either side of the train before it came to a screeching halt. Later in the day the Six Flags website has posted an update that Kingda Ka will not open at all today (June 9th). "

They should have thought of how reliable ttd was before they built a clone of it.

^ It's kinda funny because before it was running everyone knew that Six Flags was going to have a crap load of problems with this coaster. Yes, TTD is under control now but Cedar Point has really good mechanics and they even had Intamin at the park to try to work the problems out. But you know damn well the state of NJ is on the parks back now and I don't think it's going to open back up for awhile.

Not a shocker new rides have bugs to work out.

But nothing like this.

I hope it didn't do major damage to the train that stopped.

I am so mad! I mean I know all new rides have flaws that need to be worked out, but I am supposed to have a party on Sunday there! Do you think it will be open by then?

It better be back up by the June 24. If not...then I have a reason for my mom to take me there over the summer!

I knew the CF fanboy would jump all over this. If you remember, TTD was down for the entire month of June, this may open up in a few days.

In my opinion 'flying shards of metal' translates to pretty serious problem. Also, I do believe that SF bought this ride way to soon after seeing CPs teething problems with TTD.

The shooting out shards of metal sounds a bit made up to me. Kinda like how, according to people, every single roller coaster has killed zillions of people. So far, KK seems pretty reliable when compared to TTD's downtime.

I'm just glad that I already have Kingda Ka under my belt. I lucked out because I got to ride it on 23 May. A wait time of appx. 2 hours (including breakdown time) well spent.

That's too bad. I really felt that because of the problems with TTD, they would have learned from those problems and would have been able to avoid them. I guess not. But, I think every new bigger and better ride (especially coasters) will have their bugs.

I'm taking bets...I bet Kingda Ka will be up and running perfect before I will be up and posting again! LOL!!

just kidding to those in charge.

Coasterdude, stop it with the namecalling.

leeloo you are exactly right. TTD has had alot of downtime. But that was the FIRST of that type of ride. kingdaka was built as a copy of one of the most unreliable coaster designs out there. It was built with the knowledge that TTD is completely unreliable. The problems with KK aka ttd2 are WORSE than the ones that ttd1 had. Now let's hope nobody repeats that same mistake again.

My friend thinks this might of been caused by the malfunction in the trasfer track. His theory is that when the trasfer track was having problems, there was probabaly a gap of about one inch that could of chipped the wheels as it was trasfering to the main track. When it was launched the chip on the wheel got stuck on the track and prevented it from moving, causing the screaching sound. Also, if the chip was very deep, it could expose the metal under the rubber, causing large sparks that could of been mistaken for shards of metal. Respond if you understand what my friend is saying, or if you have another theory.

Uh..I don't think we know for sure how bad this problem is yet. It could have been some freak accident for all we know; let's not jump to conclusions here. And apparently the sentiment now is, Cedar Fair can have a ride that doesn't work much, but shame on Six Flags for having the same thing.

Can anyone quote the percentage of time up vs. down for either coaster at this point? I'm a CP fan but it's seems to me that both CP fans and SF fans are being hypocritical.

TTD had it's problems and still does from time to time. TTD is also 2 years old at this point and most of the bugs were worked out. KK is new. It's launching at a faster speed. It's going to have problems too. It doesn't matter who owns the ride....CP or SF.

You can say what you want about the maintenance at either place. KK is going to have problems...it's new, get over it. TTD had problems when it opened too. CP has since had a chance to get the problems worked out. If SF is committed to fixing the problems and if they need the help, I'm sure they'll contact Intamin as well.

Let up people...new technologies bring new problems. SF has invested a ton of cash in KK...they'll get it fixed.

Yeah, but let's see how lenient the state of New Jersey is when it's inspected. I don't think it's going to open anytime soon before they find out what caused this incident.

I just returned from a weekend at cedar point & ttd was in top form - rode it 2xs, front & back seat
luckily i rode kingda ka 3xs already as it looks as if it will down for a while - hopefully they get it worked out = might not be such a stellar year for six flags : (

Yes, it's a shame this happened and also that fans of one park or another will use this as an excuse to bash the other. I think we should just wait and see how long it takes to fix before ripping on the park for their problems with Kingda Ka. Hopefully it isn't a big problem because if it is, it's makes it just that more unlikely that more parks would consider getting them in the future. Look at coasters like Deja Vu or the 4th Dimension coaster "X". They were very problematic and still have some issues from time to time and because of that, parks have been hesitant to get those. So let's hope that this problem isn't anything too big.

^X and dejavu were the first of their kind, many malfunctions should be expected.

^ That was his point.....parks saw the major problems and didn't line up to buy them! Thats what makes the KK buy a puzzler to me!
