Posted at 8:17 PM EDT (0017 GMT) Jun. 13th, 2005 -- For the past 100 years, the Hotel Breakers at Cedar Point has provided guests with rooms directly across from the amusement park. Now as the hotel commemorated it's centennial yesterday, many credit the Hotel Breakers with helping to boost Cedar Point's popularity in the first place.
When the Hotel Breakers opened in 1905, Cedar Point had already been in business for 35 years. However, it was the hotel that enabled people to enjoy longer stays, bringing a needed financial boost to the park. At times, many people would stay at the hotel and ignore Cedar Point. Starting around 1940, the Hotel Breakers began to go downhill, but was reborn when Cedar Point grew too big to cover in a full day. The hotel has since been modernized, but it still retains much of its turn-of-the-century feel. Visit USA Today for more. The hotel has also put together a show of guest-submitted photos for the anniversary, viewable here.
