News: Kingda Ka Closed for Several Weeks

Posted at 12:06 PM EDT (1606 GMT)

Jun. 14th, 2005 -- Jackson, NJ - The following is a statement from Rick McCurley, Vice President and General Manager of Six Flags Great Adventure & Wild Safari in Jackson, NJ.

Six Flags Great Adventure's "Kingda Ka" roller coaster is not currently in operation. We are working diligently to bring the ride back in operation as soon as possible. However, we do expect it will be closed for several weeks.

We realize that our guests' expectations for this record breaking coaster are especially high. We apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience this temporary closure may cause.

Please check here for updates on Kingda Ka. As soon as we have determined the specific date it will reopen, we will post details.

Until then, we hope you will enjoy all of the other great entertainment our park has to offer, with over 60 rides and attractions, including our new Golden Kingdom section featuring Balin's Jungleland for youngsters and a one-of-a-kind tiger show, 6 other new shows, the world's largest drive-through safari outside of Africa, and one of America's best water parks at Six Flags Hurricane Harbor. Six Flags Great Adventure offers an enormous entertainment experience for our guests.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Rick McCurley
Vice President and General Manager,
Six Flags Great Adventure, Wild Safari and Hurricane Harbor

^Agreed. I already decided that not going on it this year isn't going to be so bad.

I thought it would be down for a few weeks based on the statement of "shards of metal coming from the train".

Hopefully they'll have it back up by 07 when I finally ride it ;)

If they say a few weeks, I think it'll be a few weeks. If they knew it was going to be closed for the season, they would tell us; there's no logic in saying it'll be closed for a few weeks rather than the rest of the season. Either is bad PR for the ride. My guess? Second week of July, KK grand re-opening!

Atleast they came out and said that it will be closed for an amount of time. I am sure they are just as upset as we are.

Hey, this is a Intamin Strata Accelerator coaster, who wouldn't expect this?

Bgwfreak...I'm sure you'll be able to ride it in 2007. But by then, it might be considered a boring ride. Before then they could be thinking...We can build it Better, Faster, Higher, Longer! I loved the Six Million Dollar Man. LOL!!

Anyway, I feel bad for those of you have are going there and may not be able to ride it. I've only been to two parks the same year they had new coasters. PKI with the Beast and BGW with Apollo's Chariot. I was not let down. They were both working fine.

Since then, I have decided not to go when a new ride opens, it's much better to wait for at least a year, sometimes two.

Here's my question....anyone know about TTD? It said it was closed today, and I've heard (I think I read somewhere on this site) that they are awaiting a part from Intamin. Is this related to the KK incident (did they realize a design flaw), and TTD will also be down for several weeks (until the fix is designed and created)? I'm going to CP in 2 weeks so I hope not! I'm guessing CP would have said so, but it's just odd that it would happen at the same time as this KK incident.

I heard that ttd will be down for the next couple weeks. OMG I am so shocked, who would have guessed an intamin rocket would be so unreliable.

So now that TTD is down yuo are against Intamin, but if TTD was not down you'd be against SF.

It is kind of a strange feeling of deja vu. Top Thrill Dragster had problems right about the same time duuring it's opeing season and reopened in early July, about the same time Kingda Ka is thought to reopen right now. We'll see what happens.

Not really. I am not a fan of intamin rockets. I love millenium force. I'm not completely against intamin, just their rockets.

I know what the problem is. It's in a Six Flags park.

I visited Cedar Point last weekend (6/10-11-12) and a ride operarator on TTD was very interested in KK and how it was operating. He mentioned that CP was made to run some tests on TTD based on findings with KK. I am almost positive that the time frame fits tho because the KK 'malfunction' occurred Wednesday the 9th. Probably not a stretch to think news travels so fast.
But I rode TTD 2xs last weekend, it was in great shape, and surprisingly, not the longest line in the park (MF was).

And not for anything, but what about the other rocket coasters ? Stormrunner ? Xcellerator ? The one in Sweden, Kanonen ?
I, for one, would like some reaasurance before I ride one of these machines again.

I KNOW WHAT HAPPENEDED!!

A spokesperson from Six Flags said that a piece of covering protecting something underneath the track disloged and hit the train, causing many problems to the coaster.
