Finance: Sales tax issues at Canada's Wonderland

Posted at 7:15 AM EDT (1115 GMT)

Jun. 24th, 2005 -- Most people assume that you are stuck with the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) when paying virtually everything that is bought in Ontario, and there's no away around it. That means if the price for fries at Paramount Canada's Wonderland is CDN $2.99, you're stuck paying the PST, right?

Wrong.

As CityPulse points out, there are certain items that are exempt from the PST. Among those exemptions are any prepared food items under CDN $4.00. However, many businesses, including Canada's Wonderland, continue to charge the PST on those exemptions.

A recent guest learned this the hard way when he purchased an order of fries and was still charged the PST. While he was issued a refund after he complained and the park apologized for the error, it was found that some vendors at the park continued to charge the PST despite saying it was resolved.

For more, including a list of what's exempt from the PST, visit Pulse24.com (June 14, 2005 and June 23, 2005).

Personally, I think this should be watched anywhere. I remember in college that the private contractor who ran the food service (and a C-store) on campus, they charged sales tax on virtually everything. Packaged food is exempt from Michigan's sales tax, but fountain drinks are taxable. Yet, I would get charged the tax for a bottle of pop or candy (both of which are exempt in Michigan). Plus, they didn't even know how to do a bottle refund and refused to accept the few bottles I bought there (not accepting pop bottles that you sell for the deposit refund is illegal in Michigan).

Dang, You Go Grill is the place I usually get my food at the park. I never really looked at the taxes and stuff.

^ I wouldn't be surprised!

This use to come up every once and a while in the stores when someone would mention something (especially with children's items....off the top of my head I don't remember what category those fall under).....but nothing was ever really done about it except on the odd occasion. The cashiers pretty much just rely on the computer register to make the determination....so it pretty much comes down to how the park cash register system is configured.

I wish they did that in North Carolina.

We have to pay 7% sales tax and 2% on top of that for food!

The governor said it was going to be a temporary thing (the increase of sales tax from 6 or 6.5) but he said the budget is hurting too much so he didn't do what he promised and repeal it.

That would be nice around here, considering we have a sales tax of 8.25% (after 9% got turned down). It's pretty insane.

It also would have been nice to know of this before I went to PCW on Friday...

Just so people know, we have to pay 15% tax on all sales items.
7%PST
8%GST
(or the other way around, i forget)
