News: Girl remains critical after heart attack

Posted at 10:05 PM EDT (0205 GMT)

Jul. 13th, 2005 -- A 16-year-old girl from the United Kingdom remains in critical condition after she fell ill and went into cardiac arrest only minutes after she finished her ride on The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Walt Disney World.

Leanne Deacon said she had felt dizzy and nauseous after exiting the ride. She had thought she would recover quickly, but park workers who noticed her condition had called an emergency crew. As she was being rushed to the hospital, she deteriorated so quickly she went into cardiac arrest.

The park let state officials watch as Disney inspectors examined the ride, which is not required under Florida law like other large theme parks in that state. They deemed the ride safe and attempted to calm any fears related to the incident, which was the second medical emergency in a month for the park.

Last month, 4-year-old Daudi Bamuwamye died after riding Mission: Space (read related article), which is known to be so intense that it has sickness bags on the ride and several riders have complained of chest pains and other injuries.

The theme of Twilight Zone: Tower of Terror is rather cool in my opinion, and is easily my favorite drop ride. Do people think it's drop is as intense as other drop rides (of any generation)? I don't; in fact, I remember it being slightly less intense. This incident is unfortunate, but unless the ride malfunctioned, it's probably not this particular ride that caused the problem.

Agreed. I didn't think it was that intense, this must have resulted from a pre-existing problem (but don't they all?)

This would have happened even if she hadn't gone on the ride...a kid doesn't get a heart attack from a thrill ride unless there's something seriously wrong with them.
