News: Holiday World reveals 2006 additions

Posted at 10:26 PM EDT (0226 GMT)

Jul. 13th, 2005 -- Holiday World, already home to two famous wooden roller coasters, is getting a third. Today the park announced plans to build The Voyage, a $6.5 million wooden roller coaster, as part of the park's 60th anniversary celebration.

The Voyage, which will be built in the new Thanksgiving section, will stand 173 feet tall, feature five underground drops and two 90-degree banked turns, reach a top speed of 67.4 mph, and will be the world's third longest wooden roller coaster at 6,442 feet long. It will also provide over 24 seconds of air time, last two minutes and forty-five seconds, and will have a 66-degree 154-foot drop.

Additional features for 2006 include a dark ride themed to a turkey chase, a tilt-a-whirl, and an action river for the park's waterpark.

See Inside Indiana Business for the press release and a video of The Voyage.

Hmm, I'm going to take a wild guess and say it'll be a gravity group coaster kinda like Hades. We shall see.

It is indeed a Gravity Group coaster, but this thing sounds pretty impressive. 173-feet tall and 90 degree turns? Not to mention the speed, the length, and all the airtime. Sure sounds like this thing will be a worthy addition to Raven and Legend.

You've still got it, Holiday World! Anybody who says otherwise can answer to me.

OMFG! I'm going to Holiday World next year! I've already got my hotel booked on Expedia, just minutes ago! Sweet! From the POV it just seemed as if the ride would never end. ON and on and on, it seemed like a coaster from No Limits, but much more incredible. 19 spots of airtime I counted on this beast, including 3 on the soon-to-be-legendary (haha pun) triple down. Drool.

Is it bad that I'm just waiting for the fanboys from the Dells and the fanboys from Holiday World to start up arguing which park is better? It'll be CP vs. SFMM all over again, just with wood this time. :)

Interesting point^ but from what I've heard, Mt. Olympus isn't really an actual park. It is of course but I hear they don't have anything beyond the coasters and their go-karts. So right there, Mt. Olympus is at a disadvantage.

Also it won't be much comparison since Holiday World already had two coasters listed high among enthusiasts on Amusement Today. And while Hades from Mt. Olympus will probably make it high on that list for next year, it already looks like The Voyage will possibly outdo anything Hades has done and will probably be the woodie that most people prefer.

I like the theme of the new area, the name of the coaster, eh...

Coaster looks awesome and looks like it might bump Beast off as my #1 woody!!!

And to boot they will have the new coaster at Beech Bend only about 2 hours away. This region is going to be coaster destination #1 next year I think. lol

Well the Dells are ending up with a lot of wood coasters. They're not all at Mt. Olympus. The S&S one is at a different park.
I think both Holiday World and the Dells will become bigger destinations for woody lovers than they already are. It's hard to compare a single park to a whole area, but scattered throughout the Dells you've got a lot of great rides, even a brand new Disk'O and Robocoaster. :)
It makes me hopeful to see this ride though, because even though Holiday World clearly knows what they are doing it might encourage other parks to install similar woodies. And maintain them as well. And so on.

This sounds like a bigger Hades, and I just got back from the Dells and can tell you that this will be awesome. Hades is 2nd only to the Beast in my book, so HW is getting a great ride.
