News: Child dies on Playland Park boat ride

Posted at 2:22 PM EDT (1822 GMT)

Aug. 4th, 2005 -- A 7-year-old boy was found dead while riding Ye Old Mill at Rye Playland on Wednesday after he did not emerge from a tunnel.

The boy, who was from Norwalk, Conn, was riding alone in his own boat after he passed the 42 inch height requirement for the ride.  It appears he got out of the boat and got caught in the tunnel.

The ride, which is a boat ride that passes through a themed tunnel underneath the Dragon Coaster, has been operating for 77 years and was renovated 3 years ago.  It propels its boats using conveyor belts.

It is the second death in just over a year at Playland, where a 7-year-old girl fell off of Mind Scrambler after she disobeyed safety rules (view story).
