News: Disney modified Screamin's brakes

Posted at 1:47 AM EDT (0547 GMT)

Aug. 8th, 2005 -- Records recently uncovered show that Disneyland had modified the brakes on California Screamin' a few months ago. Those same brakes were responsible for the train bump that injured fourteen.

Disney did not consult with designer Intamin AG before modifying the brake systems. However, Disney considers itself the designer of the ride (as with all of their rides) and Intamin as a consultant.

But Disney isn't the designer...and Intamin is more then a consultant on the ride...

In this case, Disney IS the designer. Disney designed the layout and computer software that runs the ride. Intamin was there only for the train chassis and the track.

This is what happens when the park's ego takes over.
"We designed the ride...we can fix it."
"Hey Billy-Bob, give that there thingy a whack...yup, that'll fix it"

The good news is that this accident can't be blamed on Intamin, then!...Darn stupid disney logic (yes, we DO know better than one of the leading coaster designers!)

I think the bigger problem that is going on here is DCA itself. With only 2 MAJOR crowd-drawing rides (up until TOT anyways), California Screamin' and Soarin' Over California; they can't afford to shut either of them down for any length of time. Neither of those has had ANY sort of rehab work done, or even closed for any period of time, since they started testing BEFORE DCA opened. If you check with Disney info, right now they're saying California Screamin' will be closed until January 1, 2007. However, this is just a place-holder date until they have a more solid date.

Rule # 1 in making modifications... if Intamin is involved in building it or any other way... don't screw with it, and call Intamin in so that if something happens they can take the fall. I call it the curse of Sandor.
