News: Cedar Point cuts ticket prices

Posted at 10:17 PM EDT (0217 GMT)

Aug. 24th, 2005 -- Cedar Fair has reported a drop in attendance of 2 percent during July, a problem the company says is compounded by record-breaking gas prices. In an attempt to reverse the trend, Cedar Point is launching a ticket program to bring families with young and old members back to the park.

Under the new ticket plan, seniors 62 and over and children under 48 inches only have to pay $9.95. The deal saves seniors $35 off of the usual $44.95 adult fee. Children's tickets are discounted by $15. The deal is aimed at grandparents, typically on fixed incomes, who come to the park with their grandchildren.

The discounts will remain in place through the rest of the operating season, and the park will consider the deals for next year. Geauga Lake, which is also reporting attendance slumps, says it has no plans for a similar program.

My parents saw this story. While my Dad would benefit from the discount, my mother is still too young. She's only 61.

Now, if I'm not mistaken, CP did away with the senior discount a few years ago citing that seniors citizens are more active now than in the past. That is true, but most also have a tight pocketbook, so by discontinuing the senior discount and charging them full price, there is one of the attendance drops.

Chances are though, they will not return to the park.

Sounds like a decent deal. 10 buck to get into CP isn't that bad.

That's a pretty creative idea. Getting Senior Citizens and the kids in for only $10 eac so they can go togather. That's pretty cool.

I was watching the CBS Evening News 2 nights ago and they said as the teaser before the commercial "Coming up, our reporter is in Ohio at an amusement park."

Of course I ran from the kitchen to see which one and it was Cedar Point.

They were telling how the gas prices are affecting peoples vacations this year. Especially the people with those HUGE RV's.

He reported live right in front of Wicked Twister and they also showed some great footage of the park running behind him talking.

This would have been a "cheap ploy to get people through the door" had Six Flags done it. Glad to see the positive reaction it gets where the grass is greener.
