Industry Announcements: AstroWorld closing and being sold

Posted at 6:13 PM EDT (2213 GMT)

Sep. 12th, 2005 -- It's the end of the line for Six Flags AstroWorld. Today the company announced that AstroWorld will close at the end of the season and the 109-acre site will be sold off to a real estate developer.

According to Six Flags, selling the park was the best course of action compared to adding additional attractions and upgrading the current ones. AstroWorld's poor performance and issues over parking were cited as some of the reasons for the closure.

The company will continue to own and operate Houston's SplashTown waterpark, which will receive some items from AstroWorld. Many of AstroWorld's 119 permanent employees will be offered jobs at other Six Flags parks.

Visit Business Wire for the press release.

I think many of us did anticipate that Six Flags would sell off some of the parks, and AstroWorld was near the top of the list for potential sell-offs. I wonder how many other parks will go the same way?

I don't really think many more will be sold. Probably two more at the very most. The parking issue was probably the main reason they sold off the place. I wonder where some of the coasters will be put. I'd put good money on that Schwarzkopf shuttle loop and the Looping Star ending up somewhere else, as well as possibly the Ultra Twister at the park.

Montu Man that was very rude an inconsiderate. This park has some fans, and it's many people's home park. Id be sad to see my homepark go like this. Try to pretend like you care about other human beings.

Montu Man:

You're wrong.

So incredibly wrong. This park has so many incredible memories just for me alone. If you think about the magnitude of the park's fans, the idea about how many memories this park has is mindblowing. The memories are forever and infinitesimal

/ True. Six Flags Over Texas and the Fiesta Texas parks are more promising parks than AstroWorld. It seems fitting that Six Flags decided to give this park the axe. It had poor numbers coming in each year; the park literally was running out of space for new capital investments; the recent big blow to the park involving parking and the sports stadium; and its current dilapidated attractions and buildings probably was the last nail into its coffin.

I wasn't surprised. At the first thought of selloff I thought Six Flags Astroworld. It's sad to realize that it's for real and it's right now. I'm sorry for the people of Houston once again. Houston once again faces a rough situation.

Ok WOW! What a shock. To close the park down and not sell it off? That's a huge surprise.

What was wrong with their parking?

I dont know about anyone else, but I am NOT surprised Astroworld is closing. Parking has been an issue there and when was the last time they received a non hand me down or cloned coaster? hmmmmm It was over 15 years ago. These are the tale tale signs of a park destined to close. Its sad because there had to be some sort of bad management at this park for the largest city in Texas to lose an amusement park. But overall, compared to the other Six Flags parks I've been to, this has always been my least favorite. And I know I'm not alone here either.

Bk2004, there was an issue with parking because they share the lot with a football stadium or something. It was reported in a thread about a month ago. Since they didn't have much room and then the issue of the parking lot came up, it was probably getting to be too much for them. Throw in the fact that the land the park sits on is worth $70m, I read and it makes business sense for them to sell.

While I am not majorly surprised by this, I am saddened by it. This was only the second park that I had ever visited, and I was hoping to visit it in 2006 or 2007 when I go home to Texas to see family.

Saddened, but not shocked. Montu, I for one will miss this park, as means one less park to go to.

I'm not surprised that the park is being sold, but I am surprised that it's being sold to a real estate developer and not to another park chain. Has it actually been on the market secretly for some time? Or is Six Flags just so hard up that they need the extra money that a real estate developer could probably pay? Will any of the rides be sold separately?

I am saddened, yet it doesn't suprise me one bit.

Astroworld was the first theme park I went to, so I'll be heartbroken to see lots of memories be washed down the drain. However, as a member of ACE and an avid theme-park visitor, the coasters at the park aren't exactly the best in the world, a lot of the employees are quite rude, and the park is situated in a relatively unsafe neighborhood. Even though I live closer to Houston, I'd MUCH rather visit SFoT or SFFT...far better rides, far better employees, and far better locations.

As far as other Six Flags parks being axed, don't be surprised if Six Flags New Orleans is next in line. The devasation wrought on the park is unreal. I don't think Six Flags would invest the money to clean it up and rebuild if they are downsizing. Sad times, indeed.

I wonder if this is the beginning of the Six Flags ride rotation program again. I'd hate to see these rides melted or torn down. I've never been to the park, and though I've heard it's not too impressive, it's still a park that didn't make it. And that's upsetting. It's a shame that they did so much to try and improve it: Paint jobs, removal of Texas Twister and putting some cars backward on the suspended coaster.
