News: Six Flags New Orleans future unclear after Katrina

Posted at 7:15 PM EDT (2315 GMT)

Sep. 27th, 2005 -- When Six Flags purchased the bankrupt Jazzland amusement park in 2002 and renamed it Six Flags New Orleans, it's unlikely the company could have anticipated the ravages of Hurricane Katrina. The storm heavily damaged the park's rides and left it under 12 feet of water.

It's now uncertain what the park's future will be. Under the lease Six Flags signed with the city, the company is required to rebuild the park if it suffers any damage. However, it is unknown if that provision will remain in force if Six Flags is sold.

Although Six Flags does plan on rebuilding, some analysts wonder if the park will open next year, or even at all. Some consider the park too far from New Orleans' primary tourist attractions, and it's status is further hurt by the fact that the park only operates from spring to fall.

Six Flags should just remove the rides and put them at other SF parks, then sell the land. (Sorta like Astroworld)

Ouch, that's gotta hurt. If the park closes and the rides can't be shipped, hopefully clones of the rides will be built elsewhere.

It seems they would rebuild and reopen the park, if they don't then hopefully SFA has dibs on Mega Zeph

PANTSFREE, Mega Zeph was heavily damaged with some warped wood. In other woods, its basically dead.

It dosent take much to repair the track that was damaged and the coaster supports are steel. With minimal retracking the ride could be rebuilt elsewhere

Here's a problem with selling it... the park is in a 75 year lease, and breaking that lease may be costly to Six Flags. Under the terms of the lease, the park is required to rebuild. It may end up cheaper to fix/rebuild than to terminate the lease.

Even if they decide to close it, they are stuck with a liability, which does not bode well on a balance sheet.

Lastly, while some of the post-takeover additions are Six Flags-owned rides, many rides before that are part of the lease, and aren't owned by Six Flags.

If anyone can come up with a copy of their lease (which should be public since it's with the city) I'd be glad.

Seems like they should be given a break after something like this. I think it would be better to move the rides around to other parks. Putting B:TR in SFMW would be good, and Jester could go back to SFFT. Mega Zeph would probably go to SFDL or SFA.

I'm curious, they may be required to rebuild but do they have to rebuild it to the level it was at. If the damage is truly horrific, it would obviously cost millions to fix and repair everything. I don't know if anyones knows, but could they "get away" with just building what wasn't badly damaged and running it as an even smaller park just for the length of the lease and then letting it go? They could just operate on a much smaller scale with fewer expenses less risk. Also, I think that depending on the terms of the lease, New Orleans should help with some of the cost. Afterall, they'll be getting tons of financial support from the federal government, it would only be fair to help SF rebuild the park under the circumstances so that they meet the terms of the lease.

The nice thing about Mega Zeph having "warped wood" is that the ride is a hybrid wood coaster with a steel structure, so the damage can really be considered minimal. The running rails and wooden track areas where the ride was submerged under water are the only areas that would need drastic repairs. Otherwise the structure should be sound. It seems fixing the ride in its curent location or moving it to another Six Flags park and then making necessary repairs would be better then building a 4000' coaster from scratch.
