In 2006, thrill seekers at the World's largest regional theme park will challenge El Toro, an enormous, new wooden roller coaster under construction at Six Flags Great Adventure.
The thrill ride, which incorporates the most daring features of the world's best wooden roller coasters combined with the smooth speed of a steel coaster, will be the star of a vibrant, newly-themed area of the park, Plaza del Carnaval. Just around the corner, families with young children will explore exciting, pint-sized adventures in the all-new Bugs Bunny National Park kids' area, featuring new rides and attractions designed just for them. Both new areas, including monstrous El Toro, are set to open next season. "Classic design meets state-of-the-art thrills with our spectacular, new wooden roller coaster," said Rick McCurley, the park's vice president and general manager. "As part of our multi-year expansion to a family destination, this massive coaster adventure will anchor a colorful, newly-themed area evoking the lively energy of Spanish-speaking regions of the world." El Toro's unique design, inspired by the agility and strength of the brave Matadors, features a hybrid design including a classic "out and back" track with four fast-charging drops, multiple highly-banked turns and a beastly "twister" finale. El Toro will also deliver nine "airtime" opportunities, giving riders the highly-sought thrill ride sensation of weightlessness. At 181 feet tall, reaching 70 mph, El Toro will rank among the tallest and fastest wooden roller coasters in the world. Its 4,400 feet of mountainous track includes records for second tallest, fastest and longest drop of all wooden coasters in America and features the world's steepest drop on a wooden roller coaster, 76 white-knuckled degrees. El Toro will anchor the colorful and lively Plaza del Carnaval section along a scenic waterway. This newly-themed area will feature La Cocina restaurant offering authentic Mexican fare, plus an open-air, marketplace-style retail shop and a new, themed family ride. Plaza del Carnaval will also include one of the world's rare, classic dual-track wooden roller coasters, Rolling Thunder, introduced in 1979. Just around the corner, parents and their young children will explore Bugs Bunny National Park, an all-new, wilderness-themed children's area with tons of fun for little ones. Located on Six Flags Great Adventure's picturesque Great Lake, this new kids' area, featuring Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes pals, will join Looney Tunes Seaport and Balin's Jungleland as the park's third section devoted to the youngest thrillseekers. Families will enjoy the great outdoors with new rides, an interactive water play feature, plus a lakeside theater with a high-spirited show for kids and a snack bar with lots of sweet treats. "Moms and dads told us their kids love the new Balin's Jungleland area this season, and they want more. "We listened, and with nearly 25 rides specially-designed for kids 54 inches and under, dozens of rides for tweens and teens, and the world's ultimate coaster collection, Six Flags Great Adventure will be the perfect way to enjoy playtime together in 2006," McCurley said. The new Bugs Bunny National Park, and Plaza del Carnaval featuring El Toro, are slated for a spring 2006 opening. For more information, goto Six Flags Great Adventure.

Wow 181 feet tall. And the world's steepest wooden rollercoaster. Only a year after Kingda Ka.
Six Flags Great Adventure, you've never looked better to a coaster enthusiast.

Has Great Adventure now taken over from Magic Mountain as Six Flags' flagship park? GA seems to be getting all the great rides now...

El Toro looks amazing. Are there any pictures of the twister section out yet?

I'm a bit suprised they are opening this beast up just a year after Kingda Ka. I was expecting them to take the year off, get Kingda Ka working regularly and then add the ride to give attendence another jumpstart.
Who is making this ride? It basically just looks like Shivering Timbers with a twister section.

In my opinion, SFGAd has easily moved into the #1 spot among SF parks if it wasn't there already. They have no weakness when it comes to their variety of coasters. So many of them just look to be awesome. And with SFMM and SFOG also getting major coasters this year, I just hope that my homepark SFGAm gets something other than the possible tornado slide. I'd "settle" for a cool flat....maybe a recycled S&S flyswatter???

Andy, Great Adventure has been Six Flags flagship park for a good 10 years now. Magic Mountain has only overshadowed it because they came out with record breaking new roller coasters (but have slacked off in recent years), while Great Adventure instead went for uniqueness (Medusa, first floorless, Viper, first inline twist). Great Adventure has a higher attendance than MM and has a larger audience to cater to, with the largest city in the country just 1 hour away. I cant wait to see El Toro and ride it. Its about time they got a new wooden coaster in the park. Only downside is that a lot of wooden coasters lose their popularity after a few years. Hopefully this one will be like the Beast and continue to stay popular.

Reality check....The Beast is not a popular ride. Nobody like it's! It just get's a lot of recognition because of it's size and whatnot. I would not mind if this ride was not popular in a few years because that would just mean less of a line.

Just a year after Kingda Ka and they get this....pretty cool.
It seems they are pleased with Intamin to go back to them again!

^ That would be incorrect. The Beast is still a very popular ride. People from around the world still come for this ride. Anyway, I may need to make a trip to NJ next year.

Just curious Coasterdude28, is your coaster count not updated like mines? Because according to that, you havent even been to Kings Island, so how can you judge if the Beast is a popular ride or not? I waited 3 hours to get on it, so its a safe bet that its still a VERY popular ride.

^ While the Beast is not my #1 anymore (after those horrible trims being added) it is still in my Top 5.
On topic...
Is it just me or does it look like they took Voyage, gave it a steeper drop and chopped it in half?

What's that saying, something about the forest for the trees?...Wooden coasters just shouldn't be that tall. I don't care what structure you put under it. When a woody is that large it kinda misses the spirit of what it is suppose to be. Examples: Son of Beast, Hercules...
I guess with Six Flags the bottom line these days is $$ and getting their stock prices up. If you build a record breaker the general public will show up. They have already got us there...no matter what they build I'll show up 20-30 times a year just to be there and ride Nitro,Roar,Riddler, etc.
Kingda Ka is an ok ride, but really it is just a spectacle and a decent piece of technology. I suspect something similar of El Toro.

If El Toro is anything like the recently built monster in Wis Dells, Hades, then I wouldn't worry. There is more to this ride than just the height of the first hill, unlike the other rides mentioned in your post.

5150, I wouldn't worry about it. Just because a wooden coaster is tall doesn't mean it won't have the same qualities hoped for from a woodie. I'm sure it will have some great air and out of control moments while probably being a little smoother too.
Also, I think too much is being made about the size of the bigger woodies and that they're not like old fashioned woodies. To that I say American Eagle which not too long ago was the fastest wooden coaster in the world at 66mph. Many older wooden coasters travel in excess of 60mph so El Toro at 70mph isn't that much higher.
Even SoB didn't seem that incredibly faster than some of the other woodies I've been on. Then again, all I can remember is pain and lots of it.
