News: Kings Dominion announces Italian Job Stunt Coaster for 2006

Posted at 2:57 PM EDT (1857 GMT)

Oct. 12th, 2005 -- DOSWELL, Va., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Next spring, Paramount's Kings Dominion will debut its 13th exciting coaster complete with the thrills of a Hollywood blockbuster. With the addition of THE ITALIAN JOB(TM) STUNT COASTER, guests of all ages will ride a unique, fast-track coaster experience that brings to life one of the most thrilling movie chase sequences ever filmed in Hollywood. Based on the high-action finale of Paramount Pictures' The Italian Job (2003) starring Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green, Mos Def, and Donald Sutherland, this exciting new coaster will take families on a high-speed stunt car adventure through movie sets and scenes inspired by the film's climatic chase sequence.

From the moment they board their very own MINI Cooper S, park guests will immediately be surrounded by the sights, sounds and scenes of a Hollywood action movie. Asked to help "film" the final chase scene from the famous movie, THE ITALIAN JOB(TM), riders quickly become stunt car drivers as their cars races out onto the track. Each MINI Cooper S is tricked out with audio special effects that add to the multi-sensory sensation of the experience, and as the custom stunt car MINIs peel out, everyone is transported into the stunt chase sequence. Drivers twist through a parking garage, dodge near- collisions, race down stairs, chase through tunnels and narrowly escape massive explosions triggered by gunfire from a menacing helicopter. Tires skid out one last time as the stunt cars crash through a billboard and splash down into an L.A. aqueduct concluding the chase sequence and their screen test trial as a stunt driver.

"THE ITALIAN JOB STUNT COASTER is the perfect complement to Paramount's Kings Dominion," said Richard Zimmerman, executive vice president and general manager, Paramount's Kings Dominion. "Just like any great movie, this new coaster has surprise and suspense at every turn. The interactive experience totally immerses families into the thrills of the movie and they will want to ride it together again and again."

THE ITALIAN JOB: STUNT COASTER is scheduled to open at Paramount's Kings Dominion in 2006.

PKD is not crappy. And oh boo hoo to everybody that wanted the next biggest thing. I think this ride will be good for Kings Dominion. I know a lot of non-enthusiasts who are excited about this ride and that is where the real money is. I'm looking forward to getting my test drive in the Mini's.

Wow... IJSC:- I love how they say opens "2006" and not like "may 5th" as they know it wont work as it didnt at PCW or PKI.....

I rode PKIs in June and found it to be a POS... I just hope PKDs works better... If at all.... and I hope its open when I go back to PKD.

Hey, at least they're getting a good ride. I've heard good things about IJ:ST, and I can't wait to get down there. I just hope that Paramount has figured out how to improve capacity, since I've heard that the first two were designed for 1000 pph, and management aimed for 900 in practice.

Yea, PKD is pretty crappy. I can't think of anything good about the park. They are aiming at families but I wouldn't want to take my family to that park. Not very "family friendly" if you ask me.

Don't get me wrong, its an ok addition to the park (something not launched would have been better) and it will do good for the park but I happen to think its a crappy ride.

Do you really expect capacity to be improved with a cloned coaster?

Just a guess, but I'd say Italian Job at PKI had more cycles this year than Kingda Ka. So as far as a POS, that needs to be re-thought.

I thought it was a fun ride. No, not 460 feet. No, not 135mph. It is a nice addition to a very good collection. I think there are holes in that collection (lack of any B&M), but it can't happen over night. Patience. Have you seen the acreage that place has?? ALOT will happen there in the next 10-15 years.

And if one didn't see this coming when PKI and Canada's Wonderland put theirs in this spring, one ought to think about ones roller coaster/amusement park IQ. It's lower than your toes.

I am not sure "family" is really what they are targeting there. It's more of a thrill park/movie themed place. Obviously they want families to come but when I think family park, I think more Dutch Wonderland/HersheyPark kinda places. I think it would be incorrect to say that they are aiming specifically for the family demographic.

P.S. I'd like to have a list words I can use that don't turn green, get underlined, and become a link for a travel agency or a rental car or a golf resort
